Coaches Resign Because of Parents Harassing Them

Five Independence Coaches Announce Resignation | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, Sports, and Weather | Local News

These coaches all resigned because of harassment from parents. I think resigning gives the bad parents what they want. More coaches need to ask their administration for support, more administrations need to back their coaches and if the coaches don't get it they need to look into pressing charges. Coaches should not have to go through this, especially repeatedly, because of playing time.

Everybody is a "coach" these days.

Parents harassing coaches happens everywhere. Unfortunately, nothing a coach can do about it.

Sadly, the most critical parents are those who do the least from a volunteer status. They also do not realize that coaches grow on trees.

The worst parent out there? Their kid has been a marginal starter all the way to high school and then they become a role player with limited minutes in high school. Players 8-10 in your rotation are where you can expect parent problems.

If your including part time jobs, I'll throw in umpiring a girls fast pitch softball game. You get the angry players along with the parents. Talk about the triple whammy. :lol2: Ouch!!!

Stop it. There are hundreds of job worse than those. Any job that involves sports isn't a bad gig.

Many years ago I was umping a DH, while the teams were taking infield before the 2nd game I was speaking to a guy from the visiting team (I had never worked their games before). He asked what I did for a living and I explained what I done at the bank I was working for at the time. He said, " you are an ump and a repo man, I bet you are a real a-hole!" Nothing I could say, just had to laugh.

Did a 4th-6th grade "championship" game last night as a favor….after whacking the assistant for a "punch them in the throat" comment proceeded to have 4 parents removed with 24 seconds left in the game for their comments….stupid comes in a lot of forms. The line of the night from this gem set: "I guess we'll figure out which one is your grandson on the team"….I resent that…I don't believe I'm old enough to have a grandson on the team !

I've been tossed from games in the past. One as a coach and one as a fan. the time I was tossed as a fan by an ump at a baseball game was mainly due to the ump being tired of hearing all the crap he heard from all the other parents. I was just the lucky one who opened my mouth at the wrong time and got to be the scapegoat. the funny thing was that when I was tossed the AD at the school (I was at another school, not our teams school) felt so bad because the ump really was that bad, told me where I should stand and could still watch the game and the ump couldn't see me lol.

The remark I made, and it wasn't yelled out or anything like that, just said it in normal tone after about the 20th bad call for the game (this one was a foul ball that landed 5ft foul and everyone including the batter knew it was foul as he started waling back to the plate, the ump called it fair and I said "He must be a Boone Co grad" because that is who we were playing. The ump turned around and tossed me then and there lol. I laughed.

You have to have a thick skin as an ump but at the same time I've heard many a parent get way out of line when abusing some officials.

Some schools will read over the PA before a game the Sportsmanship expectations…I think this is a good idea, but I don't necessarily think it curbs anything. I will agree you have to have a thick skin. In a high school game, you take a lot more than maybe you would in a grade school game. I'm of the opinion that if some of this behavior was curbed at the grade school level, we might have better behavior at the high school level. Kids learn what they see / hear from parents and if it's tolerated then kids think it's ok. It's a cumulative effect.

Parents abusing their kids coach only leads to lack of respect the player has for the coach IMO.

I personally ignore the majority of comments by parents, but at times it feeds the beast. I have also been escorted off the field by police and you would be surprised at how little that might deter parents. It just tarnishes the game when parents rail on officials and coaches.

In fairness to the incident I mentioned, I had a few parents tell me I had a good game and I don't believe it had anything to do with the officiating as much as dealing with the jackwagon parents….

I was thinking this post and thinking about the woman cleaning the bathrooms in the Amsterdam airport this week. It made me appreciate my job a lot more.
