Imagine Going Kayaking And Finding THIS In The Middle Of The River.

Featured Replies

Three kayakers were enjoying their time out on the Ohio River when they came across something surreal… and totally awesome. In the middle of the river, shrouded by trees, stood a large ghost ship. It turns out, the old, decommissioned ship was over 100 years-old and full of history. I bet they didn’t expect to find something so cool in an Ohio river.

Something just doesn't seem right about this. How could this go undiscovered on a river that is highly navigated?

I'm struggling with it too.

It was put their not to long ago.

It was in the Madonna video Papa Don't Preach.

Okay, let me shed some light on this. First of all, there may have been kayakers that found it...but it wasn't this year. In fact there's a kayak paddling group that has made excursions out to it each Halloween for quite a few years.

And even though it sits maybe a couple hundred feet off of the Ohio in this little creek, you really can't see back in there due to the trees and vegetation that have grown up over the years. Plus, there's an ever so slight bend in the creek that helps hide it, too. So, I guarantee you there have been thousands and thousands of boaters that have gone up and down the Ohio right by this thing, and have never had a clue that it's there. (The creek isn't really deep enough for any boating traffic...hence the reason kayakers like it so much.)

I've heard different variations of the story of how it got there, but they all seem to center around the story of someone buying it in the 80's (when it was in New York), and having it towed up the Mississippi and Ohio (where it was headed varies) with the intention of remodeling it. However, for whatever reason, that idea was eventually scrapped and the boat was moored in this creek. And then it was "forgotten" about. However, I've heard that the guy who originally bought it, actually has property that's adjacent to the creek (which is why it is there)...but, don't know if that's true or not.

And as for the Madonna video...that's the first I've ever heard that. Will have to re-watch it.

So, out of all of this, I've gathered exactly nothing in terms of its precise location. Paducah? Ashland? Somewhere in between? Please, just because you know doesn't mean everybody does.

Good to hear, because the ghost ship and woods mysteriously "appearing" in the middle of the Ohio River had me a wee bit concerned! :scared:

Its close to Petersburg. I think if you go off Lawrenceburg ferry road. Here is a different article thats a little more in-depth/pics. Queen City Discovery: The "Ghost Ship"

I thought it looked awful warm in those pictures

I am curious to see this. How about a BGP kayak trip this summer?

wow, very cool story on that link.

It's between Cincinnati and Warsaw.

Here's how I went to get to it. Drove across the river to Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Went south on US 50, and then put in at the boat ramp that's on Tanner's Creek. It's just a very, very short distance to the Ohio. Once you get there, you head up river a fairly short distance (less than a mile, I'd guess). It's on the Kentucky side. The entrance to the creek is right across from an electric generating plant (on the Indiana side of the Ohio).
