The Duke porn girl and student debt

Featured Replies

I had only skimmed the article, and thought she had more of a negative take on having made her way into porn - "If Duke had given me the proper financial resources, I wouldn't have done porn."

How was the onus on Duke to "give" her the proper financial resources to attend their university? That attitude, in my opinion, is lacking intelligence.

I think you're reading it entirely wrong. I took it as a statement, not a complaint. Sorta like if I were to say, "If my company compensated me better, I wouldn't have to drive a 10 year old car."....:idunno:

I can see what you're saying...but still, your company is your employer, and your purpose of your relationship with them is for them to give you money in exchange for work. Duke is an educational institution. They may give out scholarships, but it's not their job to see to it that every person capable of being granted admission receives the financial aid that they need.

Higher education is not a right - it's a commodity. I would liken this more to signing on a mortgage that you can't really afford, and then after turning to porn to make your mortgage payments saying, "If my lender had given me the proper financial resources, I wouldn't have done porn."

So you are not a topper.

Homey don't play that game! If forced into that situation (because Duke didn't cover my costs) I'm sure I'd have to be a bottom. Pretty sure I could not get "excited" enough about my job to perform up to expectations.

No way will I ever believe that. Ron Jeremy. Lexington Steele. Wesley Pipes. Mr. Marcus. Dirk Diggler. Buck Swope. I can't imagine them dudes being switch hitters.

Should we be concerned here? Do you have an addiction and need help?

I have to come back to this....What in the world are you talking about? How does what she's doing, which is going to allow her to most likely graduate from Duke debt-free, make her unintelligent?

Actually it makes her a 2 bit porn actress in B movies!

So, the basic question of this whole situations is...does it have a "happy ending"?:idunno:

Naw, not at all. I'm not going act like I don't know the names of porn stars though. I bet you know more men's names in the business than I do.

And yet you still watch them, I'm sure.

I'm still trying to understand why you have an issue with it. Does it bother you that much that a college chick is doing porn to pay for her education?

Nothing like degrading another's profession....

A 4, and I'd have to be desperate.

I mean, it's her right to do that, yeah. Do I think it's on the moral high ground? No.

If that's what she wants to do to make ends meet, I'm not stopping her. I just think when she says, "If Duke had given me the proper financial resources, I wouldn't have done porn" she is at very least giving the implication that it would have been her preference not to have done porn. That being said, my response is, "You had two other options. A) Find another school that doesn't cost so much, or B) Figure out other financial options ahead of time before your loans stacked up too high."

I mean, it's her right to do that, yeah. Do I think it's on the moral high ground? No.

What's so immoral about it?

I thought the interesting thing was issue of student debt being tied to taking an 'extreme' job.

She chose porn which could be considered in the 'grey' area - maybe '50 Shades of Grey' area.

Are kids doing things that are more over 'over the line' to pay their enormous debt? Are they becoming Walter Whites to pay their loans?

I sat next to a 'kid' probably mid-upper 20s on a flight last year and he told me that he had around 6 digits of student loans to repay. A couple of years a college admissions person doing a session at the high school said the government is worried that student loan debt is literally hurting the housing market since graduates are so strapped with student loan debt.

Of course she does not 'need' to go to Duke. Apparently she chooses to do so. To blame Duke for the financial hole she is in seems a little over the top.
