You think 4 way stops are bad, what about a roundabout?

The new roundabout in Cynthiana has thrown more than one person off. Nice clean new concrete full of tire marks and skids….had they left it a hayfield and just ended the roads everything would have worked out fine

A light was out at a very busy intersection in Louisville last weekend (Bardstown Road at the Watterson Expressway) and it's amazing to me how many people don't understand how an intersection works with flashing red stoplights. It was like taking your life into your hands trying to get over to the Lowe's at Bashford Manor on Saturday. Six cars at a time burning through the light and high-tailing it onto the interstate ramp.

 

Flashing red light: FULL STOP. PROCEED WHEN CLEAR. THE DRIVER REACHING THE INTERSECTION FIRST AND STOPPING FIRST THEN HAS RIGHT-OF-WAY TO PROCEED FIRST. In other words, treat it as you would as if it was a stop sign.

 

Of course, it would appear people don't know how to deal with a basic set of stop signs either, so that puts us right back at square one.

 

Going to go way, way, way back to my driver's ed training...but, is it still correct that if two or three drivers arrive simultaneously, that the one "to the right" has the right-of-way, and so on?

If you want entertainment just pack a sandwich and go sit at the roundabout at NKU while the 9th region tourney is being played at the BOKC there. It is like Clark Griswold in European Vacation ......."Look kids the BOKC, the Library, the BOKC, the Library...."

There are two roundabouts on route 237 in Boone County. Problem is there are a lot of drivers who don't know the meaning of a yield sign.

Hilton Head has several roundabouts. I've spent some time there and you can quickly tell who is from the island & who isn't about a week into your stay.

 

Their roundabouts seem bigger, though. They also have a sign saying "Please use your turn signal", which helps tremendously. A roundabout works very well if you know what you're doing & if you use your blinker to indicate that you're exiting the circle. Unfortunately, the roundabout down at The Banks (downtown Cincy) doesn't seem big enough for that to work.

I avoid 4-way stops as much as possible,especially in Mall parking lots,etc. Here in Mason County, 9 out of 10 license plates are Ohio, so you have to be extra,extra careful. Is it at all possible for Ky. to put a toll on Ohio residents coming across the river? Forget gambling they would clean up if they were allowed to do that somehow.

There's no end to 4 way stop misbehavior and it doesn't discriminate. My sincere apologies to those minivan drivers with sticker folks!

Whoever invented those stickers has made an absolute fortune

I'll admit I struggle a bit with roundabouts. I made a few laps around the one at Clearwater beach this summer when I couldn't figure out how to get out on the correct road. Give me a 4 way stop any day over that bad boy.:lol2:
