Is This The Year a Mid Major Wins the NCAA Tournament?

Featured Replies

I understand your question and I would not think so. People can never give a definition of "mid-major". I started a thread once asking what a mid-major was, and what I surmised is that most people define a mid-major as every school not in one of the Power 6 conferences, BUT, also a mid-major is not considered a traditional good team on the national scene either. I asked about Gonzaga, and everyone was like, "well, they are not a mid-major. Same for Butler. (but every other team in their conference is)" OK? Made no sense to me but that seemed to be the consensus. To me you would think your conference affiliation would define it, but who knows? I posed this same question when Memphis made the finals.

I think after a stretch of sustained success, the prevailing thinking is that teams "graduate" from mid-major status. Gonzaga, Xavier, Butler all fit this.

Exactly. So if you suck for a few seasons can you go back to being a mid-major?

What do they call it in Europe----relegation?

I hate Florida. So they'll win it.

It is about commitment to the basketball program and the operating budget much more than it is about conference affiliation. To remotely suggest there is anything "mid major" about UL, UC, UConn or Memphis is laughable...

But if that joke's pointing the other way, there are two dozen people screaming bloody murder about "How dare he say that about the 'Cats?!?!"

Another two dozen are parsing out every word of the "joke" in an effort to legitimize it, and the other two dozen will start debating the difference between whether Cal is "unconcerned" or in fact "doesn't care" about UK's FT shooting.

I would say you and anyone who took my posts for anything but a joke are taking this message board way to seriously.

Good greif UofL has won multiple national championships. I don't think any of their fans would think I was being serious and if they do then they are simply stupid, too sensitive, or both.

But feel free to call UK a mid major if it helps.

Obviously, and why I presume the poster asked. It is more than just conference affiliation. I like your stance because by your standards Murray State is not a mid-major. :D

None of those are mid majors but to me Butler, Creighton, Wichita State, VCU are all mids

Those 4 all put 3.8 million or more into their basketball programs last year. Not much mid major about that...

Yes they are. #152 in spending in 2013...

Still mid major to me.

Still mid major to me.

You're allowed to be wrong... :D

And you as well. :)

Two of those are in the Big East, and the other two are non-football / major-basketball programs. The mid-major term is really over-used, in my humble opinion, but schools like these walk and talk like major basketball programs.
