Why doesn't U.K. play people both ways? If you have a limited amount of talent and need to get them on the field to win, why doesn't U.K. do it?

Why does it have to mean the talent pool is running dry by not platooning every position? You could have put Zach Harris at RB/LB this past season or the Hayes kid at RB/DB and still considered very deep. Bo Hoge could have played WR/DB and not missed a beat. I just dont understand why they have to be all or nothing to some of you? I would be more concerned with the way it was last season when you had kids on the sidelines who could have given them a better chance at winning. JMO

 

Well they have won 6 out of the last 7 and only lost twice last year by a combined total of 6 points so I would say keep doing what you're doing. In regards to the kids you listed the only one I agree with would be Hayes, he would have been a nice addition in the defensive backfield last year considering IF he wanted to play back there. Harris was dealing with an injured arm all year from his hard nosed running so why risk him at LB and Beau is your back up QB so why risk him at DB? I know they tried to work in the Hayes kid at DB a couple of times last year late in the season because of injuries but for whatever reason the practice time for him just wasn't there.

 

Regarding the kids on the sidelines that could have helped this all goes back to the question if a player is able to pick what side of the ball they choose to play @ Highlands. If there were kids sitting on the sidelines that could have helped on either side of the ball I would hope they will make a decision to switch this spring/summer.

I am not scared to say it. I personally don't think a few of the classes are as strong as they have been in the past. If you need a few of your better players to play both ways to win then that is what you do. I do believe HHS has the talent to keep winning but games will be much much closer than what people are used too. JMO :idunno:

If I know one thing about Highlands from the past 20 years of watching from the OUTSIDE, they adjust to talent level better than anyone. While we were mired in the Texas Wishbone Triple option look for 25 years, they moved from the split T-Backfield to the spread look for 4 years, then to the jet sweep, then the spread, then... I'm interested in seeing what they do. The one thing that they do do is stick to it to form an identity for that season. That is one thing that a lot of high school programs are scared to do (Ryle, Boone Co.).

With Hoge running the show this year I could see some type of a spread with a read option put in..

QB waggle...I still see a spread with WR group but Hoge will run for yardage as well. The following year might be more 4 yards and a cloud of dust.

Sorry, I meant for this to encompass the defensive side of the ball as well. If Weinrich is moving back to O (I have no idea if he is), you may see a different front. You may not. Either way, they won't be afraid to adapt things including who plays what, where, and how much.

With all of the talk about continuing to platoon, Mexitucky brings up some pretty interesting points. Does anyone know what type of offense the Birds will be running? How about the defense? All of this talk is nice, but maybe there is not a need for 9 receivers this year thus some change positions to get on the field. There seemed to be a glut of defensive lineman last year so perhaps some are asked to move to offense or maybe everything stays status quo and the best at each position will be the one's that are on the field.

 

Not real sure where all of the lack of talent stuff comes from because if we are basing that on Frosh and JV records then many are underestimating the luxury of practicing for an additonal 5 weeks pretty much every year for the last 7. There might be kids that were stuck behind someone that has now graduated and now is there time to shine.

Is this debate a difference in coaching philosophies? I know Coach Mueller was dedicated to the platoon system and it was said by many Highlands fans that Highlands did not have 22 players capable of starting, but developed players to play the positions they needed. Has that changed? Or, has a change in coaching, changed the focus to putting the most athletic players on the field instead of developing lessor players to fill the holes?
