If you have seen the results of Marksberry in the big games and tell me that is good coaching, then you have never seen good coaching. In recent years, against Ryle, St. X, and Butler to name a few. He has great kids and alot feeding into SK right now, which is attributed to the growth in the Southern end of the county, not because Marksberry did anything. He doesn't go the extra miles to help his kids get to colleges. Is that good coaching too? I think you guys must be enamored with some succes since SK hasn't had any. His track record is not impressive. If they don't win a state championship or don't make it to one in the next few years, is it still a success when you have that many kids on a fball team or are you gonna say they can't compete with Louisville talent? They have just as many players on the team at SK as those schools do. Stop making excuses for Marksberry

Not sure where to start with this but will give it a shot. Coaches make mistakes....I've never seen one walk on water yet. If you look at the Butler game this year, yes, Butler was physically better than SK where it mattered- speed. The SK staff called that game was too conservatively in my opinion. However, most coaches do when they are even or even -1 in talent. Yes, lots of kids feed into SK. SK is typically in the middle of 6A in enrollment. Players choose to come to SK over other schools and some choose to go to others- happens everywhere (see Stringers vs. Deaton, Sampson, Swanson, etc. In general, more come to SK than leave. Jeff does a lot to help kids get the recognition they deserve. If your kid wants to play FB in college, he can. Just write that big check at D3. If you have talent, you will play at larger schools. It's that simple and is true everywhere. Big schools recruit based on measurable- not how much rear your HC kisses. As for your last comment, it really doesn't deserve a reply but since I'm here....Yes Louisville will continue to dominate 6A football because of SPEED, not overall numbers. Their guys are faster than ours in NKY...it's just a fact. I'll take 30 fast guys over your 100 slow guys all day and name the score.

You have made some decent points. However, there are other levels of college football that are not D3 level and do require a head coach to promote his kids, especially when the coaches are coming to your school asking you if you have any kids that could play college. If you don't think that is the case, go ask some of the kids that played for him. See if they think he cared about them or tried to help them get recruited. He leaves it all up to the kid and the parents to get recruited. How many kids or parents know how to play the recruiting game? Finally, I wonder if we can get the water from Louisville shipped up here since all of their kids are so much faster in that part of the state. That comment about Louisville kids just being faster is laughable

When coaches (at any level) come to visit a HS coach they are wanting to talk to the players they know. Most coaches, including Jeff, will tell them who they have that best fits the needs of the recruiter. I read article after article in the paper with Jeff praising kids. He had worked hard to get them invited to junior day events, all star games and camps. You are just uninformed or have a grudge.

Yes, the guys in Louisville are faster than our kids here. St.X and Trinity folks have been telling us that for years and they are CORRECT.

Im sorry that you feel that Jeff does everything for his kids to get recruited, but it is just not the case. Again, talk to some of his former players and see what they think of this topic. As far as Louisville kids being faster, first the excuse was they have more kids to choose from. Now its because they are faster. It just sounds like a bunch of excuses to me, but since you seem to know everything about coaching and football, I guess I will take your word for it that NKY just can't compete with Louisville schools.

Marksberry works diligently to get the kids that he feels are next level prospects recruited. I know this for a fact from personal experience. Now, sometimes kids and their parents believe they are next level talent, when in fact, they are not. I could see where that would cause some issues with perception.

As Bandit has already mentioned, large schools recruit on the basis of measurables to the point that even positive highlight tapes and camp one on one performances are becoming less important. It is all about agility and speed metrics. I believe this is now emphasized even more since Hansel and Simpson were recruited and Marksberry is still adjusting.

This is a little bit off topic to this thread but I would agree 100 percent with bballguy as far as what big schools are looking for in recruits. The 40 time and height are flat out the most important things. The weight they can put on if need be. I went through this a couple of years ago with my son and I agree camps and highlite films mean very little to DI fbs or DIAA fcs schools. The first thing they look at is 40 time and if it doesn't mean there standard the rest flat doesn't matter. I would speak HONESTLY with your high school coach if your son wants to play at the college level and ask the coach what level he would best have a chance to succeed in. Being a walk on at a DI school doesn't last long if the player doesn't have the talent and skills to make it there.

At the D1 level, I agree that height and speed are the most important factor. However, there are plenty of D2, NAIA schools that give football scholarships that need kids too. Your head coach can really make a difference at those levels, which is what I don't think SK has a great track record of doing

The biggest problem we have in Kentucky with, not just SK, in getting kids placed is that we have three major programs in EKU, Murray and Louisville that flat out do not recruit in their own state. There are only 3 D2 schools in KY, if you count GTown and that is not a lot of opportunity. My understanding is that Morehead does not offer substantial aide for athletic scholrarship. WKU is the only d1 school in state that actively recruis KY. UC does recruit out of HHS, but that is about it.

Now, with that being said, our athletes have to look out of state , with its associated higher tuition costs , where they cannot use kees money, for scholarships which for d2 and naia tend to be partial.

D1 schools are looking for height and speed. You could be the best lineman in the state but a 5'10 Tackle just is not tall enough. D1 schools know the size and speed they want at every spot on the field.

Going to have to disagree with you. If there were enough good players in Ky to fill those rosters, those schools would never leave the state. If kids are d1 material it doesnt matter if they go in or out of state they dont have to pay for school.

We have seen EKY and Murray fail to offer kids that went D1 out of state, and, had distinguished careers to boot. These schools care more about athletic criteria and the opinions of recruiting services than the game tape!

As you will see at Ohio State or UC in Ohio, or Florida with Florida kids, and so on and so on. Acvording to most current rosters, EKU has 44 kentucky kids, or about half their roster. Murray has 28, aor a third, and another large group from TN, which considering their local makes sense. Kind of unfair to say neither school recruits Ky. How many Ky kids are on Coach Cals roster? Are Ky schools supposed to take all ky kids in lieu of attempting to sign who they perceive as the best fit?

The "fit test" is the biggest excuse in college sports. The only fit that exists is, does the player want to play at that school, and does the school want that player. End of story. And, 99% of the time the player wants to play at the school that shows the most interest.

I couldn't agree more. There isn't that much D1 talent ANYWHERE. Less than 1% of all high school football players end up playing at the D1 level, and less than 6% play football at any level. Aside from some outlier states like Texas and Florida that produce a lot of D1 talent, most schools are going to have to do some searching to fill their rosters with the necessary talent. Kentucky Colleges (like colleges in other states) are not obligated to recruit only KY kids. 1/3 of UK's roster is from Ky. They aren't exactly competitive.
