Simon Kenton 2014

But, beating a State Champion is an accomplishment and it seems that many still want to discredit Simon Kenton for doing that.

It just seems odd to me that people still can't give Simon Kenton credit for what they have done the last five years. Every year I read about "that being last year" and "just because they did that last year doesn't mean they will this year", but it seems that Simon Kenton is holding up their end of the bargain and winning, but it's never good enough.

Then above, people say they were the third best team in NKY because they didn't beat Highlands, but they did beat the team that beat Highlands. And, to be fair, I'm not a fan of comparing scores either, but the fact still remains that it is arguable, and possibly even probable that, last year, Simon Kenton was better then Highlands. It's not far fetched.

I'd say if you polled NKY people who followed and know the two programs you would come up with improbable based on the total body of work though.

Your 5 year span also includes a 2-9 team three seasons ago coming off similar circumstances. The hill SK has to climb is proving itself a consistent threat as a top program, not when they have certain classes come through.

Let's compare the school sizes. Who did Highlands beat and how many boys in that school? Shouldn't 6A powerhouse Simon Kenton beat a 4A school by more than one score?

SK is an up and coming program, but they are a product of their soft scheduling. They won't get and don't deserve as much credit as some are wanting for them due to the soft scheduling. If they want respect as a program, they need to play some of the powerhouse big boy schools. Collins had their best class ever and took home the title, congrats to them.

Isn't scheduling cyclical? A down HC team was a defending state championship team when the contract was agreed to. Same for NCC. BW has arguably been better than Dixie.

A 1A and two 2A schools is exactly why SK won't get the respect they want even if two of the three are perinnial powerhouses, they're a quarter of the size of SK.

You have touched on a problem I have seen in the NKY area for a long time.

There have been schools that because of what they've done in the past get a pass every year and are thought of by many to be untouchable or at least "elite" every year even though they may not have done anything lately to deserve that ranking, while other schools have accomplished more or even beat some really good teams yet will never get the credit they deserve.

I will use 2 schools as examples. 1 of them I've had this personal fight for a couple years and it is with Covington Catholic. A school and team I've always been a fan of since I grew up in the neighborhood and under the shadow of CCH. They have always been put on a pedestal for a long time in NKY football because of the titles they won in the past. The problem is they haven't won anything of significance in 8 years, yet they have the reputation of being a great team so if you ever say anything that shines a different light on them then you are just a hater etc.

The other school wee will use is SK. As you've clearly pointed out, they have done pretty good the last 5 years in building a pretty competitive and good team. Unfortunately one of the main reasons they are not given the credit they deserve on here is because of UK#1Fan. He is a huge SK supporter and all which is awesome, but he keeps blinders on and only thinks or talks about SK and that turns many people on here off of the program which is a shame.

If you compare both teams, CCH and SK, for what they've accomplished the last 5 years it is SK that has a much better resume yet it is CCH that gets the pass over them from the majority of people on here from the NKY area which isn't right if you ask me.

SK is one of the better teams in the area but because of several different reasons will not get the credit they deserve.

I find the constant thread jacking from the Blue Bird faithful comical.

Thank you for your very rational and probably accurate explanation. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to explain the situation, and I think it is a very plausible answer to the question at hand. And, it's not an unique problem to NKY, I think it happens in a lot of places, a team being stereotyped by it's past performances.

Finally. Something we can all agree on.

Let's compare the school sizes.

I always have, and probably always will, hate the "school size argument". Highlands plays Trinity, big difference in size and most of the time they play with Trinity. Likewise, a lot of schools play and beat much larger schools. The difference is not enrollment, the difference is: do they platoon, or do they not platoon.

If Simon Kenton beat NCC, I would give them credit. If they beat Mayfield, I would give them credit. If they beat Central, I would give them credit. Those smaller schools would beat many of the 5A and 6A schools in the state, no shame in playing them.

CCH has and will continue to get more respect due to their scheduling. I believe they played one school in a smaller class than theirs and that was traditional rival Beechwood. They also played Cincinnati Moeller. They've earned their respect. SK will get their chance in the coming cycle.

I don't disagree, it does however happen both ways in case you hadn't noticed.

I don't disagree that CCH's SOS is better than many schools in the area but that doesn't automatically make them a better team nor does it automatically give them a pass and automatically placed as one of the best teams in NKY every single year.

I can only use schools that I follow closely as an example. Cooper for instance has played and beaten teams that went on the same years and won state titles in Holy Cross and NCC yet they aren't thought of as one of the best in the area and they shouldn't be. They also, since the last reclassification have played up for every team out of district except those 2 state championship teams. They have scheduled the following 6A schools for out of district games the last 3 years, Ryle, Campbell County, Boone, Simon Kenton, Holmes and Dixie...all 6A schools so because they don't play and lose to Moeller by 38 points means they can't be thought of like Cov Cath is?

SoS is nice, but just scheduling and losing to the Moeller's of the world really doesn't mean much. It is the same argument I had last year with Trinity fans during the season when I claimed BG to be the best team in the state and the Trinity fans through much of the season would have nothing of it because T's SOS was better. It doesn't matter how good your SOS is when you can't beat those great teams you schedule.

CCH 2013 year played Moeller and lost by 38

CCH 2012 played Lasalle and lost

CCH 2011 played Lasalle and lost by 31

CCH 2010 played Lasalle and lost by 43

CCH in 2010 played St X and lost by 21

CCH in 2009 played St X and lost by 56

CCH in 2009 played Lasalle and lost

My point is CCH may schedule those schools, and those were the only big time schools they have scheduled those years so I'm not holding out by not showing any out of state schools they did play and beat from big programs. Those are all the schools they scheduled and they got their butts kicked in just about every one of those games. So just because they schedule a Moeller or a Lasalle or a St X, they have to beat them once in awhile before they get credit for the schedule. Losing to powerhouses doesn't automatcially make you a great team.

CCH has played 7 big time schools out of state in the last 5 years and are 0-7 and not only are they 0-7 but the average margin of loss by those teams in all 7 games is 31 points. CCH has lost by average of 31 points to every team they have scheduled from Ohio which in your opinion means they are to be thought of as one of the best teams in NKY, yet they lose to those teams by an average of 31 points in this time frame. Not very impressive if you ask me and not what I would use to prove a point that CCH deserves the respect as you say.

SK has accomplished more the last 5 years than CCH, it isn't an opinion but a fact. I'm saying that being more of a CCH fan than a SK fan. I grew up in Ft. Mitchell, I follow CCH in all their sports.

Looks like SK in the last 5 years have gone on to not only win more district titles than CCH but have also made it further in the playoffs than CCH has....so yes, fact. CCH made it to 3rd round 3 times, SK made it to the 3rd round 4 times. Fact.

You are saying that SK is AS GOOD as Cov Cath, right?

I will buy that.
