Best first week games for 06 season? Maybe Lexcath VS St. X?

Featured Replies

I think Belfry and Pikeville will switch opponents from 2005 in this years Pike County Bowl. That may have changed, but it is the last I heard.

If so, the lineup is:

Belfry vs. Newport Central Catholic on Fri

and Pikeville vs. Henry Clay. on Sat

Belfry v. NCC should be a nice matchup week one.

Heard a rumor that they might be going back to the old schedule...both PHS and BHS playing on the same night (Saturday -- and would be at Pikeville because it is in the shadow of the building of the primary sponsor).

If so, that ought to be a very good night to see at least 3 VERY good teams. (And, if we pick things up better by that time NEXT year than we did THIS past year, maybe even 4???).

All this talk about St X/LexCath meeting in the first week when the Tigers open in Bowling Green at WKU against the Purples again! :thumb: I'm hoping that it will still be a great game this time too! :thumb:

And let the sandbagging begin.

I have to agree with you PH. Bowling Green vs. St. X. should be another barnburner of an opener. From what I hear, the Purples are once again loaded for bear (hopefully, not for Tigers :D ), while the Xmen will be smaller and less experienced than last year's team, but should be much quicker. The matchup between Hibbitt and Anderson should be interesting. Have you written any early previews on the Purps? I look forward to seeing both you and your lovely wife again next August in the Hilltopper City. :thumb:

That would be a great game Indead. Im not sure but Arent there a lot of returning starters from last years team? Either way that would shape up to be a great matchup.

I also agree. The game last year was hard fought and I believe this years game will be no different. X will certainly be less experienced but a lot of the seniors-to-be got some good reps and experience last year. I think early in the season they will be 'finding their chemistry' and things could be a little rocky. While I agree they will be smaller on the O-line, those assuming starting roles are very agressive kids and that will offset the inexperience. Now, on defense, I have heard the projected starters and if true, they will be noticably bigger on the D-line (15-20 lbs heavier per man!) and quicker.

I think this will be a great game to kick off both teams season. Had a great time (storm and all :jump: ) last year, looking forward to going back.

The matchup between Hibbitt and Anderson should be interesting.

Ox,

Think we'll see much of a two back set this year with Deuce and Vic? Sources I respect at X said Deuce may be the better of the two. Yikes. :scared:

Not necessarily better on a one play basis, but Deuce can bring the load for 4 quarters, something Vic is not capable of doing.

Rockcastle County versus Corbin will be a dandy at Admiral Stadium in Danville.

:thumb: Duece is also thicker than Vic....Vic does have incredible foot speed

Hard to say if it will be the best game the first week, but I agree with SM32 that the Highlands Dixie game should be a good one. Folks in town are expecting big things from the Birds this year with so many starters returning. But Dixie returns a lot also. It is sounds like the Dixie kids are working harder than ever. I would think that the Birds would be the favorite, but if they get outworked this offseason or take the Red Colonels lightly, there could be an upset in the making. Lets hope not. Right SM32?

CR, between Zoeller, Anderson, Finch, and Simmons (don't forget about Will), you will see a lot of movement all over the field. Drew Eckman will also provide a lot of ability as an RB. I can't remember when I've ever been more excited about backfield possibilities at X. If Coaches Glaser, Chitwood and Wagoner ever let their offensive imaginations go wild, this coming season would be the time to do it.

In regards to Anderson vs. Finch, they have two very different running styles, so it is a tough comparison. Vic never ceases to amaze me with his speed, moves and ability to get extra yards after first contact. Nonetheless, I must admit that Deuce was the most impressive freshman back I have ever seen at St. X. since Dicky Lyons in the early 60's. Not many people mention his defensive ability, but Finch is also one of the better linebackers I have seen. The presence of Deuce will allow Vic to spend more time at QB, WR, and even DB this year, while still maintaining a quality RB load. Finch, Simmons, and Eckman will also be able to give Anderson the needed breaks when his asthema is acting up, without the offense stalling.

By the way, I wanted to ask how your younger brother was doing. I was tremendously impressed with his defensive intensity, beginning when I saw him early last season against Scott Co. in a pre-season scrimmage. He did an excellent job all year, and hopefully some college recognized his future potental. :thumb:

Did you see our execution* in the first game last year? :creepy:

(*what the head coach thought they were going to do to him afterwards. On the way to a PAINFUL film grading session, I stood behind a VERY big PHS fan...not being a familiar face around town yet, he didn't recognize me but saw my PHS stuff on and assumed I was a fan too. He just shook his head and said he'd seen our JUNIOR HIGH execute better in the past. I wanted to get mad at him, but couldn't.)

Kids were put in a bad spot -- they weren't quite ready to do the things the head coach THOUGHT they were ready to do at that point in the season.

And I don't know if I'd call it sandbagging; it would actually be more "braggadocious" to have claimed we'd be one of 4 when the other three comprise two 2005 State Semi-finalists and other a 2005 State Champion. (but don't get me wrong...I LOVE that kind of competition early in the season.)
