Boone County debates arming teachers in classrooms

Featured Replies

Horrible idea.

Why? You mentioned one time a teacher you knew went nuts and went home and shot herself. That happens with cops and the military every once in a while but we allow them weapons.

This is another case of where is the least risk. One nut job teacher possible offing themselves or allowing an active shooter 10 or so minutes to have a field day while police are on the way.

Every time there's been a school shooting, this topic arises. I have never wavered in my position. There is no way I condone this.

Nope. Not just you. I'd do the same.

While going to Trinity and working at Trinity, I can think of a handful of teachers who would probably volunteer to take on such a responsibility and sitting in their classroom each day or sitting next to them in the faculty dining room each day with a firearm concealed on them would not bother me in the least. My theory is, if they are crazy, the would probably have the gun on them regardless because crazy people and criminals generally don't follow gun laws which is why "Gun Free Zones" are so funny.

Would you agree that Gun Free Zones are a joke and are basically just a huge welcome mat for an active shooter?

I'm sorry, but there is nothing anyone can say that will change my mind.

I will say this. Kalil is a nut job who is the definition of an A personality.

Let me give you all a little background on this guy. He is a constable which in Boone county is not needed. Yet he acts like he's a certified police officer who after being elected wanted dispatch to supply him with a radio etc. so he could play policeman. He is a pilot and because he is a pilot he tells everyone he is a US Marshall when in reality because the pilots had to go through a course taught by the US Marshall's he has told people he is a Marshall also which he isn't.

I could go on for hours about this guy but actually he doesn't deserve any publicity in the first place.

No. I wouldn't feel any safer knowing I was surrounded by people with guns just waiting for their chance to save the day.

All you have to do is read the frequent reports of children who get their parents' weapons and harm themselves or others. Or the guy who was a legal owner who shot the guy in the theater who annoyed him. Too many irresponsible owners, to many people with anger issues....

I'm with you. It's just a lawsuit waiting to happen. I don't like the idea of anyone actually carrying a concealed weapon at any workplace. I just have the vision of a bad day going worse when someone snaps.

Im sorry 1 or even 2 week course does not garuntee someone will always do the right thing. Resource officers are there for a reason. Let them do their job. I know of a couple teachers I had I wouldn't want to have a gun during class lol.

I think you even mentioned your not comfortable with the police having guns, so I don't think any one is shocked by your feelings on this subject. :lol2:

Many more unarmed victims than irresponsible "Legal" owners

This debate is a good example of those who believe in the ability of an average citizen of carrying out a difficult task vs. those who think it is only the government can do the job. We have seen what the government is doing and it is not pretty.

The government is going to oversee the program and only those qualified will be allowed to take part in the program. And I wondered how many people we come across in a day that are carrying concealed weapons and do not not it? I found out that a number of individuals carry concealed weapons to church every Sunday, people who I talk to and had no idea.

This has seriously been one of the best discussions we have had on a thread. There really have been excellent points made on both sides of the argument. Things brought up that I had not thought about. It still comes down in a manner that will the litigation possibilities outweigh the possible horrible tragedy that any school could have. I have always thought and still do think that the issue really isn't the gun, but the mental health issues we continue to not put enough resources and discussion into. I believe there is little we can do if someone really wants to wreck carnage on any public place and most private places. I don't think educational staff carrying guns will stop that person and the risks of them carrying bring a risk I want my grandkids to face.

The fact remains to me that with all the liberties we have and they are many, there are inherent risks that come with that and this is one of them.

Those are examples that rarely happen but dominate the media when they happen but almost daily a robbery, break in, car jacking, assault or worse is prevented by armed citizenry. Again, we need to way the risk of one happening over another.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't want to live in an armed society. That is not what I believe to be a "quality of life" environment. Things happen. But I don't believe arming our teachers (specifically) is a good idea at ALL.
