Well phooey.

Last team to make it to the state tournament undefeated was Clay County in 1989

Turnovers and lack of rebounding really hurt the guard oriented Wayne County.

A nice win for Coach Holland and his team. I think the loss to Etown kinda got them focused again.

Just got in form this game. Really liked Blevins, he can handle the ball. Woods is a smooth shooter. They have a very good and well coached team. Really enjoyed watching them play. Darius Jones for MoCo was awesome today as was Thomas. He has been starting lately and really been doing well. Thrilled for him and his family. ( His dad used to work at GRC).

 

Good to see my friend Omar Prewitt Sr at the game today.

Great win for the Indians. Outside of horrid free throw shooting, this was their best performance in a few weeks. Cisero and Jones both played pretty well for the Indians, and Bryan Wallace was fantastic as usual. Blake Thomas continues to bring tremendous heart and energy for the Indians.

 

The Cardinals seemed to wear down in the second half. They only really play 6 guys, and coming back from their tough gutty win yesterday, I don't think the tanks were full in this one. Having seen only their last two games, it would be hard to convince me that Blevins isn't their best player. He gives everything he's got, and is a very skilled scorer. I have walked away from these two games a little disappointed in Woods. He is clearly a great shooter, but that is all I've seen from him. He had trouble with getting trapped, and wasn't able to create his own offense much. Not that he is bad, but just that i was expecting more, but came away much more impressed by the rest of their team.

It'll be interesting to see how Wayne Co responds to what was a very emotional loss for them. They need to build from it, and not let it crush their spirits.

It's a shame the game didn't get played when it was originally scheduled as Wayne County would have certainly had more energy at that point. This was their third game in three days - which for some reason I thought wasn't even allowed outside of the Sweet 16. Add in that they played KCC last night, too much to ask.

IMO I think this was the right time for Wayne County to lose. Could be a very good thing with district and region right around the corner. Experience that first loss, fight through the pain of losing, rebound as a team and go into district with another level of motivation!!

Lots of teams play 4 straight days in holiday tournaments. Most of the teams in this event had tough situations. Montgomery Co played Thursday and Yesterday. Fleming played their third game in 3 days. Madison Central had a tough game yesterday.

It will be tough on a lot of teams with all the potential makeup games.

For those Montgomery folks on here, I'd like to hear your thoughts on Wayne as compared to Lincoln. Montgomery has played both (and both games were at Montgomery). They clearly are the top 2 teams in the 12th. Montgomery came from behind to beat Lincoln 57-55 at the end of December. Then there was this game today against Wayne. Which is the better team?

Lots of teams play 4 straight days in holiday tournaments. Most of the teams in this event had tough situations. Montgomery Co played Thursday and Yesterday. Fleming played their third game in 3 days. Madison Central had a tough game yesterday.

It will be tough on a lot of teams with all the potential makeup games.

 

I looked up the rule. It's that you're not allowed to have games on 4 straight days Monday-Thursday while school is in session.

 

The point stands though. Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday is not Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Nor is the difference between playing North Hardin the night before vs. Knott County Central. If the teams did not play under those types of circumstances, I like Wayne County's chances in the matchup. If they were to see each other again (and I don't think they will, but if they did) it would be in the finals, and while the rest would be similar to now, MoCo would have had to go through a game that was far more difficult the day before than this time.

Montgomery Co definitely had an advantage in terms of schedule, especially being at home, but I think Wayne would struggle with them regardless. The Cardinals struggled with the length and athleticism of the Indians. It hurts Wayne that they only play 6 guys, where the Indians give a lot of minutes to 8 guys, and can get some contribution from 3 more guys.

It would be a good game if they played again, and could easily go either way.
