Would you be in favor of 2 Halves versus 4 Quarters?

Featured Replies

Minnesota high school basketball has gone to two 18 minutes halves with no shot clock.

Would you be in favor of two halves in KY?

If so, Two 16 minutes halves? Or 18 minute Halves?

I like the four 8 minute quarters. Not in favor of 2 halves.

Why two halves?

The idea is that high school teams tend to hold the ball longer after the clock goes under 2 minutes in each quarter. So if Team A has the ball with 1:30 left they may look for only a layup or wide open three.......lets say they get a lay-up with 55 seconds left. Team B then hold the ball for the last shot of the quarter.

That makes sense. Although I don't know why teams hold the ball like that. End of the game, I get it. Any other time, why stop playing?

It's the ole stall ball trick. If the team isn't as athletic or as good as the opposition. They will use this attic to only take their best shot they can take. Or that's the theory. Two halves could be alright with the four quarters there are two free timeouts. Between 1st and 2nd, and 3rd/4th. That could be eliminated therefore maybe keeping momentum from swinging one way or another. I suggest 2 18 minute halves with a 45 sec shot clock. But that's me. :-)

So it would eliminate that 3 times a game...........and it would also eliminate a team's first position of the next quarter which tends to be lengthy also since it starts with an inbounded ball against a set defense.

And eliminates the first and third quarter breaks with no action taking place.

What about 3 thirds?

What about 3 thirds?

Leave the game as is,,it is not broken. I go a bunch of HS games each season, might see 5 games out of 50 that a team will attempt to hold the ball at end game, most of the time they will end up turning it over anyway and so be it if they are sucessful, to me it is part of the game..

Would this change alter the number of timeouts available to each team? (IMO at all levels of all sports, there are too many timeouts.)

If they did that it would have to be two 16 minute halves, not 18 minutes. The way it is now a high school game without OT is 32 minutes. A game of two 18 minute halves would be 36 minutes. That would mean an asterisk would have to be placed in the record books relating to scoring, rebounding, etc. A longer game would alter the records.

Not that that's that big of a deal, but it would have to be a point to consider.

Meant to say "without OT". I can't edit from my cell phone.

I disagree.. Why an asterisk?? Yeah it would impact stats but so did the three point line when it was put in the game.. Are all those scoring records after the three point line was added asterisked? Its an (improvement to the game) just like improvements in the past. IMHO
