For a while I was thinking of getting a pocket gun like the Sig P938 which would make it easier for carrying when I have to tuck in my shirt and people keep noticing the clips on my Galco King Tuck Holster but I may get a Crossbreed with V Clips to hide those and make the pocket gun unnecessary. Speaking of Sig, the P227 is getting great reviews where some .45 ACP fans say they like it just as much as their 1911's, very tempting.

 

I am also interested in the 10mm round and thinking about a Glock 20 (Full sized Glock 10mm) and get a conversion barrel so I can shoot .40 cal out of it also. The thing I have read about 10mm is that is a round where you really need to start thinking about reloading, that ammo can be expensive. I also full in love with Run to State's Smith and Wesson 686 .357 Magnum when I shot it a few years ago. So many choices.

I used to think about 10mm also, but after really looking at it I couldn't come up with a good reason not to since I like you already had a midsize Glock .40...I'll be all .40 in Glocks for any more that I get. I couldn't come up with a good reason to go 10mm over .40.

 

As far 1911's go I just got one that is a pretty much stripped down competition model right from the factory and I LOVE IT! Between shooting it and my Glock, I'd just as soon throw my Glock at the target :lol2: and that is from someone that loves Glocks.

1911's by design are all very much alike, it's the component parts and workmanship that set them apart. Some military grade ones are very nice but have very loose tolerances due to not wanting to jam under combat conditions, while some top of the line guns have very tight tolerances to improve accuracy. By in large am 1911 is a 1911 regardless who makes it but some are much better than others. You can get really really good ones for $800 and up, the best production guns IMO are Wilson Combat and a Wilson 1911 can run up close to $5K.

Yes, John Moses Browning was an absolute firearms/gun smith genius. He was 50 years ahead of his time when he invented the 1911 and sold the patent to Colt. 100 years later, pretty much all semi auto pistols still in some way derive from Browning's design of the 1911.

 

I am told when US soldiers were in the Philippines during the Philippine American War they encountered the Moros tribesmen. There were cases of Moros charging soldiers who either did not have his 1903 Springfield bolt action rifle handy or maybe it ran out of rounds and he did not have time to reload, the solder would go for his Colt M1892 revolver side arm and in some of those cases, the .38 Long Colt from that revolver did not have the power to stop the Moros who were often times under the influence of some type of local drug which deadened the pain of gun shot wounds. Now keep in mind, this was long before modern ammunition which has much better stopping power and ballistics. A 9mm round today probably has much better stopping power than most hand gun rounds back then.

 

At that point, the US immediately requested proposals for a gun with a larger caliber round. I believe Browning invented the .45 APC round along with the 1911 to shoot it. The .45 APC and the 1911 were both awarded the contract around 1911 and were the standard service side arm/round for the military until around 1985 when the military decided it wanted to get away from the large .45 APC and to the 9mm to give soldiers more capacity and like said before, the military felt that modern 9mm had the required stopping power.

 

The top two qualifiers were the Sig P226 and the Beretta M9 with the M9 winning with quite a bit of controversy supposedly. It seems many people felt the Sig performed better. Glock was invited to submit but backed out of the trials due to specifications the military required that Gaston Glock did not feel he could build and test in time. I believe most European militaries use either Glocks, Sigs or H&K's. There are rumors that US may look for a replacement for the Berretta M9 and that Sig, Glock and Smith and Wesson MP's will probably lead that race with one of the three winning the bid.

Here is what I have been told.

 

The best of the best 1911's are the hand made ones from manufacturers like Wilson Combat, Les Baer, Ed Brown and Cabot guns. These guns go from $2,500 to $7,500. People who buy these claim that the 1911 was never designed by Browning to be made on a production line, they were meant to be built by a craftsmen and building them on a production line can affect reliability. I am not a mechanical engineer so I have no idea. Also, if this is your range gun and not your personal defense defense gun, who cares. Just hit the magazine and rack the slide and keep shooting your target. Even saying that, I would imagine 1911's are fine for self defense, I only hear of problems here and there. Lack of capacity is what would make me consider picking a Glock, a traditional Sig or an M&P over a 1911 to be honest.

 

When getting to mass produced/assembly line guns, I would guess Kimber's and Sig's are the best in terms of quality. Great quality guns and many of their owners insist they stack up just as well to the Wilson's, Ed Browns, Les Baers and Cabots.

 

One tier below the Kimbers and Sigs would probably be Colts, Springfield Armory's and Smith and Wessons. All three great 1911's but maybe not quite to the level of a Sig or Kimber.

 

Below the Colts, Smiths and Springfields I would guess would be one like Taraus, etc.

I think the Sig and Kimber are just preference deals. Both are great.

The Taurus was loose in every way. Long travel of the trigger, wasn't crisp, slide wobbled. Just junk.
