February 7, 201412 yr Any 1911 shooters on here? I received my first 1911 for Christmas from my wife and just wondering about some tips and trick associated with these firearms.
February 7, 201412 yr Author Not sure :lol2: not sure what I don't know. I've shot a Glock for last 20 years and I know those forward and backwards. I guess I'll start with, any ammo to avoid? One drop of oil is pretty much all I ever used on my Glock how about these? FWIW My wife got me a Springfield Armory Range Officer 1911 .45...from shooting it once and reviewing it online, it seems to be an outstanding gun.

I have 2 Kimbers and a Sig. You're gonna need a bit more oil. The Kimbers are a pain to clean, but I do it religiously. The Sig is easier. The rail is easy to oil. I love mine. I have one on me often. I carry a Kimber Solo most. I had a custom IWB holster made by a fellow in NKY, took about a week to break in, but it's very nice. I haven't found any ammo they don't cycle and shoot well, I'd expect you can count on the same. Again, I love mine. The Kimber is a little lighter. And I've said it in here before, if I had one shot to whack you with, I'd take the Kimber hands down. If we were in a gun fight, I'd easily take the Sig.
February 7, 201412 yr Author Thanks I've shot Kimbers in the past and they are very nice, but a Wilson Combat is what gave me the 1911 itch. Guy I met at the range let me shoot his one day and it was incredible, of course for $4K+ it should be. I'll probably never carry mine, the Glock is lighter and smaller. Plus my son is about to get issued two new Glocks so I may take care of his current Baby Glock for him and start carrying it.

The differences in 1911's being the quality of construction but I would not have guessed that would have made cleaning any easier or more difficult.
February 8, 201412 yr For you 1911 guys, what Condition do you carry them in? Jeff Cooper used to recommend getting sufficient training and practice to where you could carry in Condition 1 safely. Condition 1 being magazine loaded in the grip, round chambered, hammer pulled back, with safety on rather than the standard Israeli style common in his days which I believe means the hammer is down and possible no round chambered. Cooper used to teach the danger of not having the 1911 with the hammer back in a high stress situation where you could goof that up and get yourself killed was greater than the perceived risk of not having the hammer back and round chambered. Just curious what you guys do. The only gun I own is a Glock 23 which is the mid sized 40 cal which I bough approx. a year ago. Being striker fired, obviously hammer back does not apply. When I first got it, I was nervous about keeping a round chambered but after some training, and tons of practice both dry firing and live firing, carrying chambered is second nature now.
February 8, 201412 yr Mine is chambered, hammer back, and on safe and in the holster. I love the safety on the Kimber. I like the solo even more than the 1911. Otherwise you might as well be concealing a claw hammer.

February 8, 201412 yr Author I was reading a story the other day on line about a policeman that carried a 1911 on duty. He said people would come up and tell him all of the time that his pistol was cocked, he said his reply was always, "It better be!"
February 8, 201412 yr Author Even though I doubt I ever carry this 1911 more than a time or two just to show it off to friends, the safety on it is IMO perfectly designed to draw and release safety in one smooth move I would carry with the hammer back and the safety on also. The safety on this gun is great.
