January 30, 201412 yr Reports: Lunches seized from Utah schoolkids because of unpaid bills - U.S. News Two issues come to my mind on this story... 1.) Is a milk and a piece of fruit sufficient (nutritionally) as a student's lunch? At my child's school, I believe if they don't have money in their account, or forgot their packed lunch, they're given a peanut butter/jelly sandwich, some carrot or celery sticks, and a piece of fruit, along with the milk. 2.) Why in the world did the wait until AFTER the children already had the food, to enforce the issue? I mean, if you want to hold a hardline on it, fine. But, do it before you start wasting food. What are they going to do the next day, and the next, until the bill is finally paid...keep throwing away food?

This makes me ashamed of these cafeteria workers.
January 30, 201412 yr I know it looks bad but sometimes schools are in tough spots. At my old school in 2008 the cafeteria was about $12,000 in the hole as a result of unpaid charges, theft, or leftovers. What are they supposed to do? A number of cafeterias generate their funding from sales. What else can they do if they are continuing to run out of money? The only option is to stop giving it away for free.
January 30, 201412 yr Most dont realize that the cafeterias in schools are not run by the schools themselves. Its a state program aided by federal funds in most cases. (private schools could be a different story) Schools really have no control over anything they do.
January 30, 201412 yr If the school warned the parents and nothing was done then not issue with them not letting the kids have a lunch. They should have stopped them before they got their lunch though, they definitely could of done things differently in that respect.
January 30, 201412 yr I understand the problems of unpaid lunch bills and what that costs the school systems; however, if you've already given food to a child, you don't take the food back and throw it away! That's something a bully would do!
