Back to Wisconsin's budget surplus, I am hoping our posters can help with this. I read where many states (perhaps 35 or so) are experiencing a budget surplus. If this is true, why is Kentucky still in a budget crisis? What is happening in those other 35 states that isn't happening in Kentucky? It obviously isn't because of budget cuts. Kentucky slashed their budget tremendously. Why do other states have a surplus and Kentucky has a budget crunch?

 

Beshear's biggest economic idea since he took office has been to allow gambling. He has had no plan B. I'm all for gambling being legal, but Beshear has been inept when it comes to the economy to say the least.

It is amazing to me that for some people every political and government problem can be answered by one simple statement - it's a Democrat's fault. With the Democrats being so horrible I am amazed any of them ever win an election. The Democratic party would have faded away years ago if this simple thinking were true.

 

Let's dig a little deeper because it isn't that simple. This thread praised Walker for his budget cuts. Beshear did that in Ky. What is the rest of the story?

Ok, you posted the stat that 30 some states are running a surplus. What do those states all have in common that is different from states struggling like KY? What is the tax base like in those states? Population? Unemployment? Revenue?

I googled a bunch of articles. While prostitution does seem to be at a high level there, human trafficking doesn't seem to be anymore predominant there than anywhere else. The articles do relate human trafficking leading to prostitution, but to say that the economic boom there has spurred human trafficking is a stretch.

I don't think there is any one correct answer. Each state has it's unique issues and what worked in one might not in another. Obviously with WI, whether anyone wants to admit it or not, what Walker did with the pension obligations has gone a long way to fixing their issues. It's probably 95% of the reason.

They have passed laws and regulations to allow for use of their resources in a positive manner. In some cases the resources are natural, such as natural gas and oil. In other cases the resource is the innovative spirit of the people of said states. In Ky's case a natural resource that is abundant is being shut down, coal. Jobs are lost, tax revenues are lost, more costs are added to the welfare roles and the tax on coal mined is lost as the total tons of coal mined goes down.

Kentucky really doesn't have that option in regards to coal do we? Most of the issues are due to fed regulations aren't they?

Where in my post did I mention the word Democrat ? I just don't think beshear understands the economy.
