I heard a political science professor say yesterday that this story gets a lot of coverage because its a simple issue to follow AND its something that hits close to home. The issues you and others referenced are more complicated and do not hit us close to home on a daily basis. I'd say he is spot on. Both of these play together, in my opinion. The KISS principle works in politics better than any other "profession". Remember, even slogans have been reduced to a single word, so the population doesn't have to think so much. Sorry, but I have little faith in the majority of my fellow voters. They don't seem to have the intelligence or attention span to tackle anything more complex than a traffic jam, that's why I think this incident will get big play in 16.

In a nutshell - if a bunch of folks throw Christie under the bus while under oath, he's done as a candidate, maybe won't last his gubernatorial term. If it's a pack of lies and a witch hunt, it will be yesterday's news soon enough and he'll be hitting the campaign trail.

January 21, 201412 yr Not a Christie fan and am not surprised at the allegations as he's always struck me as a hard ball type of operator. Even if he wasn't involved with the lane closings, I believe his style of politics leads him to draw in others of a like mind who would play games like this. Similar to Obama's Chicago cronies who I imagine have done a lot of dirty tricks without Obama explicitly knowing about them. Hillary Clinton is the same way. If someone who is truly on the up and up ever manages to rise in national politics they will stick out like a sore thumb. And probably fail miserably. Jimmy Carter!
January 21, 201412 yr Yes. Which is why they will vote for a candidate that isn't way out on the far outer space reaches of the right wing. They'll go for someone electable -- someone closer to the center of American beliefs. I don't really have a good fix on what "American beliefs" are anymore. And I don't believe those with "traditional values" appear to be in the majority. The Dems won because they banded together more special interests along with their core. As I recall, the Hispanic vote was there for the taking, but the Reps. didn't step up to the plate regarding concerns over immigration.

I think Jimmy's problem was that he was too much of an idealist, idealist to the point where he passed up being optimistic miles ago and couldn't adapt when things didn't go according to his idealist views. This flaw lead to his presidency generally being seen as less than ideal.
