Witnessed an event this weekend at a gym: Team up by 10 or so points, opposing team scores and presses. Wrong player steps in to take ball out (apparently). Coach of leading team calls time out and absolutely reams a player in an all but silent gym…way over the top IMO. Heard later that the opposing team fans were appalled by the behavior. Curious as to everyone's thoughts on what are the limits of "corrective coaching" during a time out.

Without seeing exactly what happened, I will say that I have gotten rather loud in that exact same situation, after having told a kid 100 times he is NOT to take the ball out of bounds...ever, but especially against pressure. And what does he do? Grabs the ball without even thinking and just throws it in...to the opposing team. Never got over the top with it I don't think, but let him now about his mistake and what just happened was the EXACT reason he isn't supposed to take the ball out of bounds.

 

In an empty gym a coach can also sound MUCH louder than he really is. Don't take much for a stern voice to reverberate around a fairly empty gym. With that said, yes I have seen coaches go over the top with it.

What is the issue? Too much coddling of kids nowadays which is why our society is the way it is. They keep score for a reason and at the end of the day everyone is not supposed to get a trophy.

I had 3 different high school coaches and 2 different college coaches. All three of my high school coaches would chew you out at time outs and they were very loud and times their language wasn't the best, but I thought they were great and had great respect for all of them. In college ,I had 2 different coaches and never ever heard them say a curse word or ever raise their voice. I had respect for one of those coaches but not for the other. One had character and the other didn't. I coached high school basketball over 20 years and I was loud and sometimes my language slipped but I know I had the boys respect. I believe in discipline and had it and I never ever had a boy talk back to me at any time. I don't know if I could coach the pampered kids of today with all the let do school policies. I see a lot of players talking back to coaches anymore. It was really bad at a college game I saw this week. I couldn't take that but college coaches have a lot to put up with to win and keep their job.

I was at the game as well and know the kid in question. He plays hard and gives 100%. Had a chance to speak to him later and he said he knew he wasn't supposed to take the ball out against the press but saw an opportunity to grab the ball and get it in quickly before the other team set up the press (which he did). I think the ball got turned over a bit later in the possession. Hard to fault him for trying to make a play but obviously the coach didn't see it that way. I personally don't have a problem with a coach getting into a player a bit to make a point as long as there's no physical contact and the coach is not trying to ridicule or embarrass the player. Hopefully the coach takes time later to make it a teaching moment. I've certainly seen worse.

...and yes Coach Snapp from Newport is very entertaining .... We'll worth the $5 ticket.

I want Newport to schedule Scott HS. That would be an instant Classic! Carr is fun to watch as well.

There is a fine line. Too many coaches cross it. It isn't coddling if you can calmly get your point across. Sitting a kid will teach them more than showing him your greatest Bobby Knight impression. I've never gotten that. Luckily, I never had a coach flip out on me where I didn't deserve it (i.e. acting like a punk during the game). Coach Dawn slightly gave it to me once, but nothing out of line or terrible (I never threw a pass behind my back again.) Sitting and watching others play was worse than the yelling of coaches. All that does is fluster those kids that don't like being yelled at and can mess w/ a team's momentum. In fact, when we heard an opposing coach go balistic, we knew we had the team right where we wanted them.

Hard to make a comment on seeing an incident without knowing what happens in practice and how many times that has been addressed. If kids (and parents) would focus on the following, as I was told...listen to the message, not the volume. If the kid realized his wrong after the fact, then there is no issue....which it seems he did.
