31-9 at half. Tough to overcome that if you're Cooper.

1st Quarter

The Breds missed quite a few open looks and gimmes, and Cooper had a rough go at it from the field has well. The Breds, Ben Weyer(1) and Zach Pangallo(2) drained some nice treys off some good ball movement, including a Pangallo "triple" at the 1st quarter horn for a NewCath 15-7 lead.

2nd Quarter

The Breds "D" stepped up and prevented anything on the inside, as the Jags were forced to shoot from the outside. When they did go inside they were heavily contested, and Cooper was held to Kyle Henderson field goal for their only points of the quarter. For the Breds , McDonald and Weyer combine for 9pts, and the Moeves brothers go for 7.

3rd Quarter

The Jags found their touch, Spencer Holland with 5 quick pts. set the tone, and the Jags outscore the Breds in the 3rd qtr. 14-8. Although they were down a bunch, Cooper did a great job of moving the ball around to get a good look at the basket. Each possession they were eating up "bigtime clock", but the NewCath "D" should get some of the credit for this also. Despite the fact, that the Breds had OBVIOUS "mismatches" in the paint, they failed to get the ball to Schulte and McDonald. The 2 times they did get it in to Schulte, he scored with ease. It is getting real frustrating to see this.

4th Quarter

Started to resemble the 2nd, as the Jags were held to 4 pts. through the 1st 4 minutes of the quarter, and following a Jake Schulte "thunder dunk" and the Breds leading 52-27, the the bench takes over. The Jags, Jonathan Liechty with a nice 8pt. quarter, including 2 treys.

Really liked the play out of Cooper Jr. Colin Hathorn, kid is a "load".......anyone know if he plays football????, he's got the body for it. Also, Jr. Jonathan Liechty, very nice stroke. Coach Sullivan does a great job with the kids he has, they play hard-nosed defense.

Hathorn is a big baseball player. Would be a nice tight end though if he played football.

I've seen NewCath play about 5 games this season. Not once have I seen much attempt to get the ball to the post players. Tonight was hurtful to watch. This team has one of the biggest and most talented combo in the state in McDonald and Schulte, yet they are wasting their talent by launching 3's all night long. This team will struggle to win a regional championship if they don't utilize their assets, and that's a powerful inside game which consists of 6'8" Schulte and 6'7" McDonald. You can even throw 6'6" Weyer in the mix to be more deadly. NewCaths guards are very good, but that's not what separates them from other teams. CovCath and Holmes have great guards as well, along with the rest of the state. It's the D1 combination in the paint that takes this team to a different level, yet NCC seems not to use them. Can't figure it out!

NewCath won tonight but it was not a fun game to watch. If they think they can turn it on and start using their inside game when competition comes knocking at their door, they'd better think again. It was very disappointing to watch this tonight, most of the people in our area of the stands were also scratching their heads trying to figure this out.

If they try to get into a 3 point contest with CovCath on Friday, it could be a rough night.

Your point about the ball not going inside is well taken, and could cost them down the road.

Ouch.

WINNER, WINNER, Chicken Dinner. I agree 1000%. At times Schulte looks "fit to be tied", when he has position and the ball never comes in. Weyer & McDonald the same.

They would get even better open shots from the outside once they utilize the "bigs", especially when they have such an advantage in size.

I will say when Zach Pangallo & Tanner Moeves are "feeling it" from the outside, "fire away", they can put up points in bunches, but you can't have your "bigs" fighting and gaining position and not getting the ball to them.

As Clyde has said many times, high school basketball is a guards game.

These are teenage boys. Generally speaking, they all want the ball. They all want to shoot the 3. They all want to try to join the 1000 point club.

(Oops---pardon my "Trolling". :lol2:)

Haven't seen NCC yet this season. Are opposing coaches "packing it in" against the bigs? That's what I would do. I would make NCC beat me from outside. Sometimes its just a matter of taking what the other team will give you.

I have read several posts that Moeves is shooting over 50% from behind the arc. That equates to over 75% from inside the three point line. A direct result of teams overplaying the big men and giving open looks to the guards.

On Friday night, if CovCath pressures the guards, extends and tries to double out front, you will see the ball go inside time and time again. One big at the foul line to help with a release from the pressure, and one big on the block.

The only way this game turns into a 3 point shooting contest is if CovCath goes away from the defensive sets that has gotten them to 11-0 so far this season. I just don't see it happening at this point in the season.

Was McNeil hurt? 2 points?

Look at the box score, I was at the game the bigs were not open in the first half and they passed the ball outside for the 3, great team play.

Agreed. For the most part in the first half Cooper played zone daring NCC to shoot from the outside. Tanner, Zack, & Grant had wide open looks. When you look at their scoring they had bigs: 10, 10, 9, 4, guards: 10, 8, 5, 2. 33 pts from the bigs, 25 from the guards. Looks like a really balanced lineup if you ask me. Plus I'm really sure Coach Dawn knows what he is doing more so than the people on here complaining about the ball not going inside to the "D1" players. Hope the boys dont read this nonsense. Hey boys, "Great team win last night, now go get another one Friday night at CovCath."
