One word...Exposed. This was a total team effort by CCH and was the definiition of TEAM. By exposed I am refering to CCH figuring out you cannot stop Bolden so you contain him with TEAM defense. They packed it in and made it virtually impossible for Beetle to penetrate and do work. While CVH did rip Bolden twice it was his teammates that provided great help in "containing" him. Pretty darn good strategy which everyone else needs to take notice. Contain Beetle and concede he will get his 25 and make somebody else on this team try and beat you. Point #2, HHS failure to take advantage of some serious foul trouble by the CCH bigs by getting the ball inside was major problem IMO. Chames ruled the boards and CCH had no answer inside for him but HHS couldn't get him the ball. Point #3 the dawgs offense was painful to watch. WAAAAAY too much standing around watching Beetle dribble the ball!! There wasn't much set offense being ran and converserely CCH looked like the movie Hoosiers playing team ball and running "sets". In the big scheme of things this is just one win in the possible 3 times these two teams may meet so HHS has plenty of time to fix some of the above and make a serious run again.

 

You can call me crazy but Bolden is the best scorer in NKY and possibly the entire State bar none, he cannot be stopped as he WILL get "his" BUT Nick R. is by far the best PG in the truest and purest since of the position. Totally runs CCH and it is going to be difficult to stop him from doing as such, again just one man's opinion. The one-handed lay-up was truly old-skool (if you were at the game you know which one I'm talking about).

 

This was my first time seeing CCH play this year and everyone better look out because this team might just win this region and after what I witnessed last nite this poster will NOT be surprised one bit. I may have a different opiniion tomorrow after watching NCC play tonite but as of this morning I won't be shocked to see any of the Big 3 make it to Rupp.

1st Bolded: Year in and year out Holmes has a strong talented lineup with tons of potential. Taking nothing away from them because they have numerous trips to Rupp in their resume to prove that they have what it takes to get out of the 9th, and in 2009 proved they also could bring the state crown home.

 

With that said, the lack of running offensive sets has been something lacking with them year after year. With all that talent, I can't help but think how much better they could've been year after year with a disciplined offensive approach to complement their fantastic natural abilities.

 

I have to believe that the present coaching staff of Booher/Listerman want to see them execute offensive sets too, and must have drilled them in practice to do so. I'm also assuming that Henley in the past made this attempt as well.

 

The Bulldog players had first row seats last night in how a disciplined team gets it done, as the Colonels displayed it pretty much right in their faces.

 

If the Holmes coaching staff is ill-effective in making the players follow this, then I have to believe that CovCath's demonstration of it should've grabbed their attention giving them first hand knowledge that it behooves them to start executing like so, as the coaching staff undoubtedly has tried in the past to impress upon them.

 

Perhaps Booher could show the kids films of his Shelby Valley State Champs team to let them see what it means to follow his style and perhaps it would encourage them to take a crack at it.

Third, I was really impressed with Ruthsatz and CVH last night. Ruth obviously had a good scoring night but it was his penetration and passing that really stood out to me. He wasn't selfish with the ball and that was part of the reason we saw CVH's coming out party. Extremely good work by the young freshmen on playing so well against a tough opponent.

 

Fourth, as other have said, Beetle was still able to get his but I was surprised at the lack of help he received on the offensive end. With CCH bringing the double team quite often I expected Bolden to find the open man but it never really happened.

 

Fifth, it was great to meet BigVMan, Clyde, and Mentsch-addfjkfd-jsadfkas last night. Unfortunately we didn't get to converse much due to the fact that we were "so far away" (mentsch's words). Also good to see LB and Walter again. Nothing wrong with a Tuesday night impromptu BGP gathering.

Was nice meeting several people last night, NKUClubBaseball19 among them, but was also great to get to catch up with B-Ball-Fan, LB13, Oldbird, and Clyde -- GREAT way to watch a basketball game.

The Colonels are the better team, it is that simple at this stage. They have five starters that can score and they share the basketball. Having seen Ruthsatz play this year compared to last year it is very clear that he is not looking for his shot first. The VonHandorff kid had a whale of a game and made open shots. He didn't have very many that were contested but he made open looks. Just an impressive starting five for CovCath and the subs played their roles very well. I thought they got into transition and usually found the open man. Very unselfish group and will be a tough out in March.

Does anyone have any idea what CovCath's shooting percentage at Holmes the last two meetings?

The Bulldogs were pretty poor on defense all night particularly on rotations. Credit CovCath's passing and shooting. On offense, Holmes is in need of a 3rd person to step up and score and keep teams honest. McClendon was hurt with foul trouble early and they have to find a way to keep Hill on the court because it takes a load off of Chames in the post.

Key juncture of the game which was alluded to earlier and that was Chames missing the free throws, but if I recall correctly, He missed what would have been a monster jam off the baseline and in which CovCath quickly got it up court and scored, then came the missed free throws.

Bolden was OK tonight and he did get frustrated at times, but he is going to have to cut down on turnovers and maybe a few less "heat check" jump shots.

Was he visibly frustrated and we have seen that a time or two but tonight he seemed to wear a little more emotion on his sleeve. Did they get into his head? Maybe to an extent but I think he was getting frustrated with the inconsistency of the hand checks or lack of calls.

Case in point. Right off the bat, Bolden fires his first shot with an off the dribble three and got hit on the arm by CVH and no call. Ensuing possession the officials fall for the Ruthsatz flop and McClendon picks up his first. CVH was face guarding and was allowed to put two hands on him on cuts and dribble drives. Those are fouls. He should shoot more free throws than he does. If teams are going to be allowed to body him or steer him with hands he will struggle to an extent.

Is that the reason they lost? No but could be a part of his frustration. I'm not trying to suggest that officials had a part of the outcome of the game but trying to shed light for his possible frustration.

As NKU said Holmes won. Jumped out to a 12-0 lead and CCH never recovered.However, give them full credit. They battled and got it down to about 5 but couldn't get any closer.

IMO Lee is exaggerating the "flop" issue. Nick R has obviously exaggerated getting fouled in the past. He hasn't done much in the games I've seen and didn't think he did much last night.

Love PK as the kid works so hard and gets 120% out of what he has to give. If you look back at my Cardinal Mooney post, you will see that PK did the same thing in Fla. too.

 

"Stars of the game for CovCath against Mooney were Parker Keller and the CovCath bench.

 

The starters got into early foul trouble and at one point in the 2nd quarter only one CovCath starter was in the game.

 

While Keller only scored 5 points in the game, he was in the face of his man all night long, making the Mooney score keeper inquirer of me, does CovCath play this type of "D" all the time? He told me they just don't see that kind of "D" in Fl."

Holmes was up about 12 at half. CCH was able to cut it down to single digits in the final 3-4 minutes, but Holmes was in control. Ended up winning by 5, I think.
