December 23, 201312 yr No doubt about it that NWA absolutely changed the game. Dre's production on "Straight Outta Compton" altered the universe of hip-hop forever. But... KRS-One, Afrika Bambaataa, Slick Rick... I listen to them CONSTANTLY. Yeah I like KRS-One and all the guys you mentioned but could not enjoy it near as much as the stuff that would follow years later. I agree the guys you mentioned were at the top of the list as far as being quality rap pioneers.

Then in middle school I heard "36 Chambers" for the first time. I was all in from that point.

I was all in from that point. Yeah gotta love the Wu. It's like the flood gates just opened up around 1990 on and groundbreaking rap and hip hop was coming from everywhere.
December 23, 201312 yr Once you dig into commercial/radio music - whether it be the Nashville or LA variety - you find there are a handful of people who write or produce almost all of these songs. If a writer is churning out a hundred songs a year that are getting divvied up between the record label acts then they are probably going to sound pretty close to the same. I like pop music every now and then, and some of it can be unique/innovative, but I've never been able to stomach mainstream country. I think part of the reason is that "authenticity" and ruggedness are perpetual themes of the music, yet it's sung by overaffected actors who are reading lyrics put in front of them by some suit. Nothing about any country song or country artist is remotely better than the worst rap I have ever heard in my life.Exactly how I feel! ..........about rap being horrible. Old Country > new Country and rap and honestly, I'm a rocker but have love for some of the old Country stars. BTW, I have to put the video on FB!

December 23, 201312 yr Sigh...... One thing about country music this year. It reminds me of my youth. You see... 1) I dated guys that... 2) Drove trucks... 3) Down dirt roads (I lived on one). 4) I wore blue jeans...probably not loose fitting ones... 5) When we drove down to the river... 6) There really was nothing better than that summer moonlight... 7) Maybe mixed in with some of that "good stuff"... 8) and being called "girl" by a boy with a bit of back roads twang sounded pretty good to me. If this wasn't your experience I understand why you don't get it. I'm sure that I wouldn't "get" other songs based on other backgrounds. I just know that these songs take me back to my youth. I don't enjoy all songs with this story line. There needs to be a musicality to it that is catchy and makes me want to move my head to the music or connects with me in some other way. So...I've now defended country music. :lol2: I didn't think that would be how I would start my morning.
