This is an incredibly accurate explanation of why pretty much all of the popular "country" music being put out these days is just formulaic, regurgitated, predictable crap.

Saw this on FB yesterday, really nails it! Exactly why I can't get into new (pop) country. Give me some Hank, Hank Jr., Merle, Waylon, Willie, Cash, Keith Whitley and those guys any day of the week.

There's plenty of bad hip hop like there is any genre.

 

Music IMO is all about associations and feel. While some are more technical in their analysis (how do he flow, is it "country" enough, etc) MOST people just like what they like and it can be for a multitude of reasons.

 

Why is it necessarily bad that country and pop are morphing? I like pop. I like country. Hell, I like sometimes when country acts incorporate a rap into their tune.

 

Someone mentioned earlier that country music needs to go back to the days of Waylon and Cash. Good music. However, today's sound is MUCH more popular than it was back then.

 

There's noting wrong overall with country. Yes, I , too, feel there's too much "truck" "girl" "dirt road" and not enough originality. However, that doesn't mean that one of those unoriginal songs isn't good or catchy.

It took some doing, but my husband turned me into a country fan. I have enjoyed many concerts from various artists. We are hoping to get Garth Brooks tickets for his final tour.

 

I will admit, like anything else, as country becomes more popular, there is always a rush to throw more stuff out there, that usually isn't a quality product. I mean, chew tobacco, chew tobacco, chew tobacco, spit! Yuck!

I like older country music also but I got tired of hearing about divorces and dogs and prison. It is no different today than it was when people loved Hank Williams Sr and then came Conway Twitty. Different styles but great music. I like all music. I can listen to rock one minute then be in the mood for classical the next. When one person dislikes a whole genre then IMO they have no taste.

Like Clyde, I like Country Music, but also like Pop / Urban / Hip Hop / Rap as well. Here is the thing, I don't care if every country song is about chicks, trucks, beer, and fights. If the lyrics are good and the song has a hook that I like, I'm in. You want to go Colt Ford and rap in your country songs, I'm up for that too. You can crush these country artists for a lack of originality, but at the end of the day, what they are doing is working and selling. Heck, Zedd has had two of the most popular songs of the year in terms of Billboard and downloads, and he just mixes them.

 

I'm the exact opposite of a music snob. If I like it, I don't care if you do. I'm not going to tell you what to like and I don't want you (plural) to tell me that what I like is junk. To each is own. You like hard slash-metal, have at it, but for me, I'll pass. I'm not going to say it "stinks" or is "junk", it just isn't my cup of tea.

I wouldn't be so sure, some of that early hip-hop and rap is pretty unbearable. I mean Run-DMC was a groundbreaking rap group and personally I just haven't really been able to get into them. I appreciate all the rap pioneers like Sugar Hill Gang, Curtis Blow, Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash, all those cats but I can't listen to them at all. IMO rap didn't really turn into something I could really get into until NWA changed the game and then albums such as "The Chronic" and others followed.

 

I wasn't born until 87' so that could explain it, but even growing up at a young age I was still into Pac, Biggie, NWA, Dre, Warren G and Nate Dogg. My neighbors were all 7-10 years older than me so they kept me in tune with what was hip even at the age in which I probably shouldn't have been listening to most of that stuff. I remember I talked my mom into buying me "The Chronic" when I was like ten years old and I'll never forget the look on her face when I opened the CD case up. :lol:

 

 

Moral of the story though even as a youngster I have an appreciation for the older music. Even though I didn't come until after the time period most of my favorite music comes from the late 60's-70's. So I have went back and caught myself up on most music, early rap's just not anything I could ever get into. Frankly I think it sucks. Early 90's/G-Funk era and on I can roll with.

I'm a new convert to country music, which may not be country to the traditionalists. I really like to listen to the Zac Brown Band, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, etc.

No doubt about it that NWA absolutely changed the game. Dre's production on "Straight Outta Compton" altered the universe of hip-hop forever.
