I don't think it's 1995....There is no Covington Catholic or Leslie County? Certainly both these teams would of been rated above HHS that year.

I was there. It was a rainy, miserable muddy mess at Cov. Cath. as I recall. I also think this was also the notorious cannon game. Although I certainly could be wrong about both.

Highlands finished third in their district that year and finished runner up in the state. I have often felt that that late season run to the final was a huge turning point in Dale Mueller's future success.

 

W/ the talent that he had coming back, he was going to have success. Their win against us in '95 after they had lost to Holmes really changed their season around. After that they were on fire, minuse the Ryle game, which I believe was played right after Mason got hurt, or he got hurt that game.

Shawn Taylor was one of the best backs BG has ever seen, big, fast, strong, but his Sr. season was '93, where BG finished 10-3 with two losses to Warren Central.

 

'95's QB was Sylvester Gray and the RB's (BG was in the Wishbone then) were Brian Harpool, Steven Spurill, and Delvin Colton (who many will say is the most dominant player ever to play at BG...(the RT on that team was pretty special too )

I watched that 1995 Championship game, BG vs. Highlands. Wasn't that Coach Haley's last game at BG?

Hopkinsville may have been the best team in the state that year that didn't win the title. They had boat loads of D1 talent that year. Miguel Merritt went on to play LB at Bama, there QB set a lot of passing records at Cinci, Artose Pinner was a backup RB that went on to star at UK. Merritt had a brother on the team, as well, that was a stud and they had a 6'6 WR that went on to play D1 ball. I think they also had a couple of D1 linemen. They beat Tim Coach's Leslie Co team that year by about 50 points, after Leslie had beaten Highlands and were blowing teams off the field prior to that game. They also handed Mayfield it's only loss of the season that year in a classic game.

As far as Beechwood and Mayfield goes, I didn't think either team was much better than the other. They played different styles. Beechwood was a fast strike passing team with a heck of a QB and heck of a WR that gave the Cardinal secondary fits all day long. They would take the ball and score in about 2 minutes. Mayfield would get the ball back and put together 12-15 play drives mostly running the ball 4-5 yards at a time. Mayfield's OL dominated Beechwoods DL all game long, but, the Tigers were so proficient offensively, they would answer back in 2-3 minutes. Then Mayfield would eat another 6-7 minutes off the clock on a long drive and score. Basically, neither teams defense had much of an answer for the others offense. Game could have gone either way.

That Hopkinsville team was loaded. I actually drove to Hopkinsville that year with a couple other guys and watched that Leslie County game. It was a dismantling. The Tigers had so much speed at every single position and I was shocked when they lost to Bowling Green in the playoffs. Highlands thumped Leslie Co in the rematch also in the semifinals then lost to BG in the finals.
