PITCHING....Who are they and how many innings did they even throw at the varsity level? Hitting is their strong point. Pitching though?

 

Ryle should be #1 to start the season. The reason is pitching. They have a very deep rotation and three very good, experienced pitchers at the top of the rotation. They also will still have a very solid line up (Downs, Clarkson, Forbes, Deters, etc) that will score plenty of runs. They also play a very tough schedule every year. Top five would be Ryle, Beechwood, Dixie, Highlands, New Cath.

If going on pitching alone, the staff of Suchanek, Combs, Stringer, Randolph, and Fieger is going to be tough to match. Their only variable will be the lineup in the 5 slot on. If Hamilton, Schmidt and Booth all hit the way they did in 2012, that team could be special.

 

You forgot Brett Slusher. He hit 4th last year for Beechwood and had a monster summer hitting 2nd for the 18U Colonels.

Nope. I will assume he will hit cleanup again, my point was after him it got shaky last year and the Tigers struggled to score runs.

Tricky Coach Mullins never posted the true batting averages for the Cincy Enquirer until regionals, didn't Combs lead them in homers? Suchanek had 4 I think? and I can't remember where Stringer ended up but had his share... anyone know? I think Combs had 7? I like DINGERS! LOL

Combs had 4 batting .330. Suchanek had 4 batting .404, Stringer 2 batting .408 and Slusher 1 batting .261

This is not pointed at Beechwood in any way but I don't put much faith in team reported stats anyway. On several occasions last year I saw where teams reported a guy going 4-4, when there were 2 of either errors, walks or HBP's included!

Coach Mullins knows the game, develops great relationships with his players and builds self confidence wherever he coaches be it HS, summer, or fall. He is excellent at promoting them to college coaches also, witnessed it first hand. If you followed the stats last year they were misleading at best. I had worked with one of their hitters and he had never batted under .400 and the stats were closer to .250 with terrible Slug%. I had a laugh with tiger parents after I ask them about it. Good to go with what I say.

Again, my comment was not pointed toward Beechwood but that is exactly my point. Teenage boys aren't the most attentive to detail :lol2:

I never put too much into stats especially batting averages that teams post. Yes BW is guilty but other schools are very guilty whether on purpose or not of misleading stats especially when it comes to hitting.

I just think that high school baseball has a lot to do with pitching and I think Ryle's pitching has a chance to be better all through the rotation. It is always tough to predict the 9th region but they are my favorite. I gotta back my boys although I am a strong "Max" supporter as well.

 

Agree, Ryle lost leadership and players that contributed to a great season last year . Everyone wants to rank them in the the top of the region. Im not convinced they will be able to get out of their district.

Not so fast. Bellew walked off the basketball court stone cold and was gunned at 86mph at a Flames showcase without a winter pitching program because of the hoops, we all know what Ethan Bennan did in the regional. Jeremy Downs following in his brother's foot steps with more velo pitching lights out in Pastime tourneys including the 17u national championships signing with IU Southeast as a pitcher I believe. Forbes pitched for Mullins in the Champions fall league making the showcase and the All-Star team pitching 2 innings of 5 strike out baseball setting 85 in a tourney in TN. That still leaves Mac Welsh who shut out the Midland Redskins for 6 innings during the summer before moving to pitch for them. That's leaving out Colt Cordery, set out last year recovering from a football injury. There should be 3 pitchers moving up from JV who can contribute right away. Should be a much improved rotation. But to be honest Brown, Heppler, Schmall and Lawler with his sidearm delivery will make Cov Cath hard to beat in the region.
