Brossart was preseason #2 in the 10th region...Newport just got rolled by 42 by Holmes.

 

Can't compare scores, but I guess this gives us some idea as to how good Holmes is this year.

It is what it is. Here's a stat for you - 54 Fouls, Five Players foul out. Total insanity and no continuity to the game.

 

When parents want their money back, when the players are frustrated as to what is permissable and what is not permissable, and the coaches don't have an answer for them, you've got a bad product. Right now the way the games are being called it is a real BAD product. Call the fouls that are fouls. Get back to advantage/disadvantage, instead of looking for and simply calling contact. Like it or not basketball is a contact sport. Beng told to "adjust to it" makes no sense when there is no definition to just what we are being asked to adjust to. The "new officiating" is the Obamacare of high school basketball, equalizing talented, and not-so-talented teams, through the miracle of mass called fouls.

 

Our free-throw shooting woes, 22-40 from the line, led to part of our problems tonight. Rewarding driving, out-of-control players who make contact with defensive players, by whistling fouls against the defense is the other.

 

Somebody, and I suggest it be the Athletic Directors, need to unite and threaten to revolt if necessary, to get some semblance of the game of basketball restored. I understand fully what the directives are - but they are WRONG! They have destroyed the product and are ruining the game. It might sound good in a board room, but it isn't working out on the hardwood.

 

Off my soapbox - Drew Burns had a big night, scoring 20 for the Mustangs with 17 of those coming in the first half, many on awesome assists by our point guard Jake Jennings. Trentman picked up the slack in the second half, scoring 15 of his 19 points on the night, while Jake Jennings put up 13 points and was our lone bright spot from the charity stripe connecting on 11 of 13 free-throw attempts. Newport sophomore Ethan Snapp is the real deal and a pleasure to watch play the game. Snapp scored 22 points, with 14 of those coming in the fourth quarter, a quarter that saw 31 free-throws shot (combined/both teams).

 

To Newport's credit they play hard, take it to you, and shoot well from the outside.

As mentioned earlier, I was looking forward to seeing the Snapp boy play. He was very good until the 4th quarter when he became great! Coach Snapp does a great job with his team. His son Ethan is a class act as well.

This early in the season a win is a win. Just shows each team what they need to work on during the season. I am sure both teams will improve.

Good to see Snapp with 22... I said it over the summer and I'll say it again. Ethan Snapp is the best scorer in the region for 2016. He is going to put up some huge numbers and be a problem for teams the next three years.

The foul situation was a nightmare, I agree with Mustang's assessment. Drew Burns put on a "clinic" in the 1st half, Wildcats had no answer for him down low.

I just knew he was going to have a good year this year.

Get used to the fouls. 10th region teams are really going struggle to adjust at the beginning of the season as the region as a whole is generally a more physical one defensively.

 

Officiating in the Holmes/Lloyd game was terrible last night as well. No flow. Foul on any contact.

The excitable energy Snapp brings to the game is worth the price of admission. Where he goes his team goes. It's even a joy just to watch him in pre-game warmups. He's a machine that does not stop. Some players just have that "certain something". Snapp has that "certain something". The Turner kid also compliments that with his "never say die" attitude as well.

 

Sure, Newport is no Holmes Bulldogs this year, but no team should dare overlook them. The Wildcats come to play.

I agree. Snapp is a special player and will continue to get better. He puts in the work and it shows.
