The problem is that there is no consistency to what is being called.

I concur that the physicality at last year's state tournament was totally over the top, and expressed that (unpopular) opinion here on BGP. However, we have made a radical dash to the other side of the ship. Somewhere in the middle there is common ground. I think that players should be aware of when they are committing a foul. That is not happening. Fouls are being assessed like lottery numbers, and the players are totally frustrated.

 

We (Brossart) consider ourselves to play great defense. It is how we are able to compete with the big programs year in and year out. We put pressure on the ball, get in the passing lanes, bring weakside help, and stand in and take charges. If the officials are going to reward the offense for initiating contact, and we are going to be punished for absorbing it, then we have lost any edge that we have earned by being a good defensive team. It then becomes a horse game, and those who have the best free-throw or 3-point shooters win.

With the point of emphasis being on calling more fouls on contact, the one team that came to mind that would suffer was Brossart. I don't mean this in a negative way. The Mustangs have always played tough aggressive defense. It has always involved bumps, hand checks, etc. Now this style of defense is going to be called as a foul.

 

Rather than complain about the calls, how about we teach the kids to play position defense, move your feet, keep your hands off the ball handler and play a cleaner game. The teams that adjust rather than fight the new way of calling the game will be the ones that have success.

 

Until then, practice your free throws and extend your bench.

Consistency? 9th region refs let the hand checks go in the JV game. A different set of refs that let the kids play? Maybe that's why they were doing JV and not varsity?

Newport is very young and the core group of kids are from Newport. If they stay together, they will be very good over the next couple of years. Brossart JV did improve to 2-0 winning the hand check allowed game by a score of 49-35.

I agree. Snapp is a special player and will continue to get better. He puts in the work and it shows.

 

As a coaches son you can tell he spent a lot of hours in the gym while dad was coaching. Very nice young man! High upside for him. 14 of his 22 came in the 4th quarter.

Must realize this isn't all on the officials. They are only doing as instructed. What happened in the past is that players were getting away with murder using their hands to "control" their opponents. The KHSAA decided to correct this and the pendulam has swung back the other way. I think if people are patient the players AND officials will adjust and meet in the middle and by mid year the product will be better than now AND what it had grown to be. Let's don't be Chicken Little and cry the sky is falling. Be patient and let it work it's self out.

Agreed. All we ever hear is "as long as they're consistent." That's going to be the challenge but it's always been a challenge. Officials are not robots. They all have ways of calling a game. Players just have to adjust. You may not LIKE the way it's being called but you have two choices: adjust or sit due to foul trouble.

Actually should make them BETTER. Correct form and practice with concetration enhance free throw shooting. Not many kids want to do this , from high school to the colleges, who are just as bad. I can't believe the shooting form some players have. Don't coaches see this or do they just not know the proper form to shoot. It is pitiful at times in high school and college.

Snapp has moxy and can shoot it. Once he puts on some size he will garner some looks from schools.
