Rumor: Nick Saban to Texas is a done deal

Featured Replies

There have long been rumors that connected Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban to the Texas Longhorns and on Wednesday another rumor was passed along that said Saban leaving for Austin is a done deal.

Of course, this is strictly a rumor so it should be taken with a grain of salt, but it is an interesting bit of news.

From The Football Braniacs:

We have word now from two trusted sources that Nick Saban to Texas is a done deal. One of the sources said the money he will get is substantial (obviously) but we haven’t got any word on what that number might be.

UPDATE
: for those asking for exact dates on when this is going to happen. We don’t know. We are telling you what we know which is that we have two very good sources that have told us that Nick Saban is going to Texas and one of the sources said that the money is going to be substantial. We would not have run this unless we trusted the sources.

I've been told the same thing.

With the history of ncaa coaches denial and then doing the opposite I will not say that he will not go but I am saying that I will believe when he is in burnt orange at the Texas presser announcing Saban as head coach.

Let's just assume this is true, and he takes the Longhorn job....Where does Alabama turn? Do they look to guys like Dungy or Gruden and see if they'd be interested? Do they promote from within with Kirby Smart (unlikely IMO)? Or, do they go after a rising star like a Sumlin, a Franklin, Petersen, Strong, etc?

I honestly would not be surprised if Saban leaves Alabama which sucks because I don't think I will like him nearly as much at Texas. I've like Alabama since Shaun Alexander was there back in the late 90's. I'm pretty sure Alabama may burn to the ground when Saban announces he's leaving. If he's a smart man he will do a press conference with either lot's of security or not in the state of Alabama.

I would have to think that a lot of(most) that would dependent upon how much of Saban's staff wants to stay in Alabama and who wants to go with him or do their own thing.

You think they'd seriously consider promoting someone to first time coach at Alabama? I don't see anyway they go with someone who doesn't have HC experience.

I think that it is safe to say that Gruden's name will be rumored whether he is a consideration or not. After all, Gruden's name has been rumored for every job that has came open for years. I think that if my local High school job should ever open up I will post that he is taking it. lol

Actually I think that K. Smart would be a good choice, he has been with Saban and ran his defense's at Bama. Also, the asst. that went to Colorado St. may be considered.

I do agree that they would go for a big name though.

So.......if Saban goes to Texas, does that immediately make the Big 12 a better conference than the SEC?:idunno:

I had lunch with Nick Saban today, and IF (IF..................) he takes the Texas job, then John Calipari will get first shot at the HC job (If he doesn't take the Knicks job).

If this is true (and I am not saying it is), I hate to see Mac Brown not leave on his own terms.

I never said that, I said I think a lot of what happens will depend on what coaches are wanting to stick around Alabama and who wants to follow Saban or do their own thing. I doubt they go with any one on the current staff unless they just can't get one of the guys they go after. The only person on the staff that would have a shot IMO would be Kirby Smart, but that's if he's still there and if they can't get anyone else on their list to take it.

None of the Orange Bloods I am privileged to speak with will confirm this. Most of them want to chase Saban, but if Mack wins against a Baylor, UT could get a BCS birth. Mack won't be going anywhere if this is the case.

Coach Saban will be on Gameday tomorrow. I'm hearing contract extension @ Bama.
