I know it's a scrimmage but considering it's two of the top 5 teams in the state, what are everyone's thoughts?

Quentin Snider v James Bolden

Malik Dow v Markel McClendon

Jaylen Perry v Armani Housely

Corey Douglas v Marcus Hill

Kelan Martin v Quinton Chames

 

Game is at 4:15, I believe, at Lawrence Co as apart of the Fast Lane Classic.

and video... or is that asking too much??? A few months ago I solicited opinions on the Bolden/Snider comparison, and I was surprised by the number of responses that ranked Snider ahead of Bolden. I'm a Bulldog homer and all, and haven't seen Snider enough to form an intelligent opinion, but I'm pretty impressed by Bolden. That match up, of two D1 point guards is gonna be a good one... will we see it again when it counts?

I think Ballard has an advantage in 3 of the 5 spots. What a great scrimmage.

Here is my take on each match up:

 

6'1 Snider v 5'11 Bolden

Snider is a little bigger at a legit 6'1 and maybe a little stronger but I'd give Bolden the edge in overall athleticism and quickness as well as a better outside shot. Agree this one is probably a push.

 

6'3 Dow v 5'10 McClendon

Dow is physically stronger and bigger than McClendon but quickness and defense I'd give to McClendon. Dow's strength and length could make things tough for McClendon. I don't think either can guard one another in a one on one situation. McClendon probably has a better shot and is quicker off the dribble. Dow is more explosive. This is tough for me to call. I think in the end Dow's size is the biggest difference but wouldn't be surprised to see McClendon prove me wrong.

 

6'3 Perry v 6'0 Housely

This could be a very tough match up. Perry has good size at 6'3 185 and is going to be one of the most athletic guys on the floor. If Housely forces him to settle for jumpers, they will be ok, but if he is allowed to use his strength and get to the rim, they are in trouble. This will end up being a battle at both ends. Housely is the better outside shooter and more polished player, IMO, but Perry is the better athlete and more explosive off the dribble.

 

6'4 Douglas v 6'5 Hill

This is more evenly matched than you realize. Hill will have an advantage in strength and is just as athletic, if not more athletic than Douglas. I'd say Douglas is more explosive though and quicker off his feet. Both can block shots but I think Hill is more likely to knock down a jump shot than Douglas. Douglas will have an advantage in quickness.

 

6'6 Martin v 6'5 Chames

As excited as I am for the Bolden/Snider matchup, this one has me even more excited. Chames is more athletic and quicker, but I think Martin is a more complete player, as far as being able to step out and either take you off the dribble or knock down the midrange or outside shot. Chames is quick off his feet, though, and will make things tough inside for Martin with his ability to block and alter shots with his length. I think Chames will play with his back to the basket a little more, whereas Martin has transitioned his game to more of a face up 4. Martin might have an advantage in strength as well, but considering how big Chames has gotten compared to last year, I might not be giving him enough credit.

 

This will be a game that helps both prepare for the upcoming season. Looking forward to it.

Heights for Ballard may be an inch or two off. Perry and Dow are both listed at 6'3 but from seeing both in person, I'd say they are more in the 6'2 range....haven't seen either since early summer though, so they could have grown.

 

I've seen Douglas listed anywhere from 6'4-6'6 so maybe someone else can confirm that.

Both fan bases have to drive 3 hours to watch their team play. I'm not trying to be a financial scrooge, but it costs the schools and the fans a lot of money to travel for these games.

The Fast Lane Classic is usually the biggest pre season event in the state. The schedule isn't as stacked this year as previous years but you still have 3 top 5-10 teams there in Holmes, Ballard, and Trinity.

 

As far as the schools paying for the travel, I can almost guarantee the event made it worth their while to drive that far for a scrimmage................

Unless I totally misunderstood the director of the classic, the teams are paid a SIGNIFICANT sum to attend.
