Elk hunt drawing

Featured Replies

Just my opinion, I'd choose whatever weapon you feel comfortable with. Then I'd pick a bullet whose ballistics you prefer and has enough energy and expansion to do the job on your once in a lifetime hunt. Personally, the A-frame or partition bullets are my fave. Nice would channel, acceptable flight. I'm excited for you man.

This.

The .308 is plenty of gun to take an elk. Can't go wrong with a .300. The .375 would obviously do the job but is overkill IMO.

I don't know how long of shot you could possibly face. Like doc said, I would take which ever one you were comfortable shooting accurately. I'm not huge on using a gun that I borrowed and haven't shot much, especially if I have a gun I know will work.

Again, put the shot where needs to be and the caliber isn't as important. Also really pumped for you and this opportunity. One of these days I'm going to give this a try.

Season opens on Saturday. It's getting hard to sleep at night thinking about it.

Don't overthink this...cross hair centered, breath out, squeeze through, pack out...

I'm jacked for you. Enjoy it. Gonna be warm Saturday.

...and what did you decide to shoot?

I'm gonna be on the northeast side if Hazard.
About an hour and a half from me. Have fun man, I'm really interested in hearing how it goes.

I sighted in my .308 Remington 700 this evening at Open Range Sports today. Pretty sure that's your neck of the woods, doc. Never been there before, but it's AWESOME. Highly suggest for anyone who hasn't been. It's apparently one of like a half-dozen five star gun ranges in the entire US.

I hadn't taken out my 700 in a couple of seasons, but I had let my best friend's brother use it a few times, so I it was more than prudent for me to go run a box of rounds through it to sight it in. Put my last 6 rounds in about a 1" group in the bull from 100 yards, so I'm really happy.

Also, I was out of Scent Away soap, so I ran up to BassPro and picked some up on my lunch break today, and I decided to but a monopod to shoot off of. I've never used one before, but it only set me back $30, and seeing as I'll be hunting in a completely new location to me, I figured it couldn't hurt. The range only allows rifle fire off of a bench, so I didn't get to shoot off of the monopod...so we'll see whether or not it gets used (if it needs to be). Who knows, ha.

Can't wait to hear how it goes for you. Are you just hunting this weekend or did you take off the next week?

Yep you have a crowd of anxious folks ready for the details. Man, I hope you enjoy every minute.

I've got the whole week off if need be...but my guide swears up and down that after 7 years of guiding, he's not ever had someone fill their cow elk tag on the first day he's had them out. So all things said, I'm hoping to have my butt planted in my office chair come Monday morning.

I'm excited for you..........:popcorn::popcorn:
