Stats 1's vs 4's - Interesting!

And just because some lower seeds win or come close to winning it doesn't mean that justifies letting in said team. It just shows there were some quality clubs that didn't make the playoffs. Happens at all levels and a multitude of other states.

I have no problem withy any team getting in the playoffs that had to earn their way in. The teams that don't have to win a game to get in I do agree with the majority and think that isn't right.

Cooper was a 4 seed but at least they had to earn their way in by winning in their district play. That is a huge difference than being a team that goes 0-10 and gets in.

The bottomline is, what does it hurt anyway? So there are 4 teams for each district that get in, last I checked no one was being mugged or stabbed or shot. For those that don't like it do us all a favor and keep your whining in your house and skip the first week of the playoffs and do something nice like take your wife on a date night. I promise the world won't end because a team playing on friday night gets beat by 40

How do you feel about all the teams getting into the playoffs in all the other sports?

Also a joke.....consistent enough?

4 teams in, rediculous !

4 teams in, rediculous !

Why?

What does it hurt? Were their kittens being kicked night?

Maybe since there are so many people butt hurt knowing that 4 teams make it in and refuse to acknowledge the fact that 3 and 4 seed teams win every single year. Then maybe we should set a new rule, any 1 ort 2 seed that loses in the first round of the playoffs should be banned from post season play for 2 years for being so embarrassing to the sport. Would that work for all the whiners?

What many who complain every year seem to ignore is the fact that somje districts are so much stronger than other districts. The fact that some districts 1-4 seeds are better than 1 seeds in a lot of the othher districts in the class always seems to be lost. No one will ignorre the fact that Louisville's 6A distgrict from top to bottom can usually beat any team in any other district state wide, or the fact that 5A NKY district 1-4 seeds are usually among the best teams when comparing districts sate wide.

So a 4 seed in some of these districts would easily be the 1 seed in other districts gets lost on those complaing about 4 teams getting in, and the only ammo tthose against 4 teams is are usually 1 team like a Boone County. 1 team isn't the majority folks, it's the minority.

And the Award Goes to.....

You can print it out at home and fill in the blanks...

Yes, just like basketball regular season district games seed the teams for the post season. The only difference is only 4 football teams (with a couple exceptions) qualify in football. Just because fewer teams qualify for the post season doesn't make those regular season games part of the post season tournament. They aren't. I draw a hard line between post season and regular season, even though some football teams don't make the post season. You say the regular season games are part of the post season because some football teams don't qualify for the post season.

Sorry, some people may not have read the other thread so I wanted to get that in here. I won't reply to your quotes further because we know where each other stand and we just look at this differently.

I agree 100% Anyone who even compares baseball, basketball or softball to football playoffs couldn't bbe more wrong if they tried. All those other sports every single team gets in the playoffs. They can ccall a turd a rose and say that baseball etc. playoffs start in the regular season, no they don't. Playoffs start with district tournaments. That is not part of the regular season, that is a playoff period.

Football is the only sport of the 4 I mentioned that actually in the majority of cases takes into accountt the regular season to see if a team gets into the post season.

to say otherwise is a complete misunderstanding of what post season really means.

^This!

Here is perspective. Let's look at Boy's Soccer this year. Why were these teams in the playoffs?

Rose Hill .......... 0-8 ..... lost 10-0 in round one (multiply each goal by 7 to get a similar score to football; this was a 70-0 loss)

Eliott Co. ..........1-9 ...... lost 10-1 in round one

Ft. Knox .......... 1-18-1... lost 6-0

Butler Co. ........ 0-9 ...... lost 10-0

Apollo ............. 2-18 ..... lost 7-0

Middlesboro ..... 0-12 ..... lost 8-0 AND STILL WENT ON TO THE REGIONAL!!

I could build big lists like this for every sport. My point is bad teams get into the post season in every sport and there are big blowout losses in round one in every sport. Football is not any different and I don't see why football should be treated differently.

So does it take their regular season in account or not. Seems like the proponents for 4 teams use whatever side of the argument that applies to a particular statement. The 3-4 of you that agree "like" each others posts, but they contradict arguments of each of the others.

So are football "regular season district games" just regular season games and are completely separate from post season OR are the regular season games used to eliminate teams and advance teams on to the first round of the state.because if they are used to weed out some teams from the state playoff, then it's intentions are exactly the same a a district tournament in Bball. Football just can't have a district tournament at the end of the year because its football.

Answer this one question for me. IF football did only allow 2 teams instead of 4, explain to me how the district process (not how it's determined, just the result of the process) would be any different than any other sport?

In football, you are essentially "earning" your way into the playoffs by how you do in your district. The problem comes when you only have 4-5 teams in a district, teams with terrible records "earn" their way in. When you have 0, 1, 2 and 3 win teams "earning" there way in, the criteria is way too relaxed. Why even make the regular season district games matter if you're going to let 90% of the teams in anyway???

I have said for me it's has nothing to do with the blowout games. It's either earn your way in or let them all in. You can't talk out of bothe sides of your mouth and say "what's it hurt" or they should all get an opportunity to let it play out on the field and then come back with a statement that says football is the oy sport where the regular season matters!! Which way is it?

So answer my question above. If the regular season didn matter more and they only let 2 teams in, how would it differ from Bball? Again, football lets too many teams "earn" their way to the post season.

Is there a district process in football toe earn your way in or not? Ther is and you can't just ignore it. The problem is they let too many teams "earn" their way in. If there is any process at all in place and that's the current process, no one can argue that teams with 3 or less wins should be getting through a process that is intended to eliminated teams and advance teams that have earned a spot. And if you don't think that is what the current process is intended to do, you are just ignoring it or crazy. The problem is the process is errored. If you're a proponent of letting them all in, then that's a different conversation because then its an agreement that its across the board and the last man standing is the winner. But that's not the case in te current structure. So either fix that the teams that make the playoffs have actually earned their spots or just agree to let everyone in and play it out! Don't tell me you have a process where district games mean something. Because they ONLY mean something different in football if you happen to have 5-6 teams in your district. If you don't, them the football regular seasons means no more in football than any other sport. You're only playing for seeding, just like every other sport.

I have commented on this subject a number of times.

I want to point out the main items that are frustrating to see.

1. Most, but not all, schools make the playoffs. A sliver of only 15% are left out.

When we did tryouts for a State-wide team and had 9 kids show up for 8 slots those of running the try-out gathered and said we are not cutting one kid. We said we do not want one kid knowing he was the only one to try and not make the team. We were going to cut 2 or not cut at all. With only only 15% (28 or so) school left out of the playoffs this scenerio feels the same. If you can get 192 schools into post season (many with 0-10 records) then get everyone in. Quit leaving out a very small percentage. Otherwise go to taking only 2 or 3 top teams.

2. 0-10s make it. 4-6s do not.

The clipping of 1A and 6A so that all those teams get in, regardless of record, while teams in large districts in 2A through 5A have teams sitting out post season play - even with good, solid records is terrible. I count at least 5 0-10 teams that got into post season. Most of those were 1A and 6A, 1 was 3A. But left out of post season were teams that were 4-6 (Knott County Central, East Carter) and 3-7 (Bath County, Taylor County). So how do 0-10 teams get into the post season and teams with respectable 4-6 or 3-7 records do not? This just does not seem right at all.

3. State is all that matters or 5 weeks of survivor style playoffs.

Does anyone celebrate district titles? How about 'Region' titles? Is it still a 'Region title' when the region changes every year (6A issue)? The playoffs are just that - playoffs to a State Championship. Its just 5 weeks of 'Survivor style' playoff. There is nothing separating the Region Championships from the State Championship. They are the same single tournament and any Regional Championship, whether it is your first in 20 years or your 20th in 20 years is not really special event. Its State or nothing in the current setup. And that means 6 teams are Champions and 220 or so are just fodder.

Indiana has 2 distinct tournaments - A Sectional tournament and a State tournament. Each is 3 weeks with 7 or 8 teams in each Sectional and the winners of those tournaments advancing to the state tournament. It sets two distinct milestones. It does require 3 weeks for each but Indiana only plays 9 games. Since everyone gets into the Sectional tournament every team will have 10 games minimum. Having two different levels will give the lesser programs or rising programs something to shoot for - and be measurable. Of the 192 teams that come into the post season about 170 or so know they will not will state. So for them its just knockout playoffs.

So that its on this subject - forever. The horse is dead. But there are still things that could be improved.

RCC9 ... without quoting your long post #42, here is a simple statement. Each sport has its own little twists. I could ask you why in the world does a team get to lose a district tournament game in basketball and still play in the regional? Not only that, some districts don't even seed their districts. They draw names out of a hat to set district play. How crazy is that? Where is the uproar? I can't name a team but I seem to recall teams with 3 or 4 wins who lost in their district and still qualified for a REGIONAL tournament! Talk about not earning your way in. It doesn't get any less deserving than that. Not only do the regular season district games mean nothing, the district championship games mean nothing.

You don't have to answer those questions. I am just saying the various sports do have some quirks in their rules for post season. And if it is all about earning your way in, football does a better job of it than any other sport because they don't allow every single team to automatically play in the post season.

It was terrible tonight in Princeton. 35-0 at the end of the 1st quarter in 39 degree weather. Hancock County in really down this year. Our jv was having success on them, and they couldn't substitute, because they only had 23 kids on the team. They got a descent gate($$$) because a lot of people would come out to see the local boys take on anybody at $5 a head, and split the gate. No other reason to even play the game.

Hmmm...in 2009 a really down CC team got trounced by Ft. Campbell in the first round...don't remember you guys saying you didn't want to at least have a chance to play. Not to mention perhaps the experience is what has led to this point 4 years later?? Just food for thought.

I guess my take is a little different in terms of perspective. I do agree that if we aren't going to criticize the other sports for allowing really bad games, then why do we put football in a different catagory? Sports have always been about competition (not being competitive-don't confuse the two). Allowing teams to compete in a game that teaches you that life isn't fair, you will get knocked down a whole bunch, and how to persevere when things aren't easy is vital for these young men in such a soft society. If we only said teams with such and such record get in, then there would never be the Rudy's and underdogs of this world that beat the Goliaths (there have been several teams with losing records or even at best, going into the playoffs that won the title or made it there). I know they are blue moon events, but the fact that one happens every now and then is enough to keep that spirit of competition, even in blowouts, alive. Just a thought. The parents not showing up at these games happens with undefeated teams too...parents can suck regardless of how good their son and respective team happens to be (thats a discussion for another thread!)
