MHSCardinal Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 The Panthers QB was impressive running the ball and that big 260 lb RB was a load to bring down. Good, physical matchup of 2 really solid 1a teams. If not for the turnovers, could have been a different game, but, I said in the pregame thread, if you want to beat the Cards, you need to play an error free game cause they're a team that won't beat themselves and they're too good offensively to give them extra chances. They also always seem to make great halftime adjustments to slow down there opponents.
twenty4seven Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Russellville scored the first two touchdowns of the game, but Mayfield out scored them 42-7 from there...make no mistake about it...Russellville is for real! Great respect for the panther football team. They rushed for a ton of yards (I'm sure someone will post the stats later) they ran hard and tough, and they refused to go down. Mayfield beat a good football team tonight...good job Cardinals!
Voice of Reason Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Congrats to Mayfield. Final score was about what I expected but it was more fun getting there than I thought it would be. Games like this are good for a team. That's why I am looking forward to Beechwood versus New Cath next Saturday. Games against tough opponents make your team better.
redleg13 Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Mayfield never ceases to amaze me! Big test next week!!
snakesnot_2000 Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I was impressed with Russellville. They played extremely hard and jumped on us quick. Their QB was impressive running the option. Mayfield made the adjustments and fought back to tie this game up. We had poor tackling and hopefully this will be corrected the next time we play them. Mayfield bent but did not break in the 2nd half. Very good win for us against a good team. Mayfield will have to play better the next time these teams meet because they are good.
MHSCardinal Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 This isn't one of Mayfield's more talented teams, but, they sure play with a lot of swagger and confidence and just beat teams with good, solid fundamentals and you have to give the coaching staff it's due. They seem to have a great feel for the pulse of the team and seem to always make adjustments that get the job done. Another strong suit of this years team is the OL. They may not always blow the DLs off the ball, but, they almost always seem to get stronger as the game goes on and if they have a lead late, they take over the game in the trenches and control the game in crunch time. For so many years, it's been a Jonathan Jackson, Xavier Shelton, Tyreese Murrell type skill player that takes over a game, but, this year, it's the OL. Not a bad thing, just different from some past Cardinal teams.
Toothpick Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Russ was as tough as advertised and came out of the gate and punched us in the mouth. At the half they had rushed for 273. When was the last time that has happened if ever. Second half, after adjustments we took control
fan4nascar Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Great coaching staff, I'm not sure anyone makes better halftime adjustments.
Toothpick Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Great coaching staff, I'm not sure anyone makes better halftime adjustments. I agree with this whole heartedly, our offensive and defensive coordinators are incredible football minds. Joe Morris, like his legendary father, Jack, surrounded themselves with staffs that were great and it payed huge dividens Our defensive coordinator resigned his successful head coaching job in MS to return here. Thank goodness he and his wife wanted to get back here to be close to family Our offensive coordinator is a former college QB who is largely responsible for Mayfield modernizing its offense, somthing I have always felt was the key to our recent success and somthing I always thought was hard for Coach Morris to do as it went against everything Mayfield football was built on in our smash mouth, 3 yards and a clooud of dust tradition.
Mayfieldsportsfan Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Team Stats Russellville First Downs - 16 Rushing Attempts-yards - 43-212 ***This is what is in the paper but individual stats equal 364. I don't know how many they lost to sacks or TFL. Passing-yards - 1-5-4 Total yards- 216 Penalties-yards- 5-35 Mayfield First Downs- 17 Rushing Attempts- 21-147 Passing-yards - 6-12-197 Total yards - 338 Penalties -yards - 1-5 Barrett Croslin had 20-173 yards rushing for Russellville. Stuart Mills had 16-138 yards rushing for Mayfield.
bugatti Posted October 26, 2013 Author Posted October 26, 2013 The Panthers ended with 5 turnovers, correct? How about the Cardinals?

I have said this before, but I still can't adjust to Mayfield throwing the ball around the field. A general stat line before would have been 3-4, 120 yards passing, 2 TDs.
MHSCardinal Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 There were years in the 70s, 80s and 90s that Mayfield had some very good throwing QBs, but, were lucky to throw it 10 times a game. More like 6-7on average. Of course, they were also blessed with some really good RBs and OLs back in those days, so, 4 yds and a cloud of dust worked pretty well. In addition, those teams had a lot more kids to choose from(7-800 students) than they do now(350-400), so, that makes a difference from a depth standpoint and the type offense they run now, seems to work better with the numbers they have to play with.
