Blue Jays and that game with Smoltz vs. Morris was classic baseball. Tip of the cap. Won against the Indians. Lost 4-2 to the Yankees after taking the first 2 games in New York. Swept by the Yankees. I would imagine that the Yankees had their share of great players so let's not just say the Braves choked when they were obviously matched up against other great teams.

I wouldn't say they've had the best teams as of late, but in the 90's they hands down had the best pitching staff in the entire league and pitching is a good 75% reason teams win if not more.

The only positive about the BJ Upton signing is that it showed that the Braves are on occasion willing to spend the money. They just chose quite poorly. It seems they will probably let McCann walk, so that's not where the money is going. I don't know who is available, but it is long past time that the Braves acquired a proven ace. Teheran is the only guy I see with the prospects to be a true ace. The others are all solid arms, but what has destroyed the Braves in the last decade is that they are built well for 162 games, but the 5 game divisional series rips them up. The other teams simply bring better arms than them.
October 9, 201312 yr I don't think they choke. In baseball you need 1 great starter and 2 very good onesusually to win it. How the Braves didn't win more than one in 90's with Glavine, Smoltz and Maddux is still mystifying to me, they were three great starters. I still think they are one of the best franchises in the last 20 years.

Braves need to pray that Upton bounces back, they need a quality 2B (not Uggla or Johnson), sign Kimbrel long term, and get an ace. That way you hopefully have an abundance of pitching next year in case of injury or someone sucking.

I fully agree that any rotation with Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, and even Avery should have won more than they did in the era that they were in BUT they faced some pretty tough teams in the playoffs and the World Series that they made. That being said they greatly underachieved and it's not even a debate. However I do not see consistently making the playoffs and winning your division and occasionally making the World Series as being considered a "choke" job.

It's these types of responses that show your knowledge of the Atlanta Braves and their history is limited to what comes on ESPN or other networks. How can you say they are one of the worst, that makes no sense. Yes the collapse in 2011 was horrendous and was absolutely a choke job BUT one season does not make up an entire two decades of history.
