September 26, 201313 yr Got any habits that will keep your hands busy? LOL - even as I finished typing that, I realized how it sounded! Never been a smoker but both my parents quit after 30+ years and Mom said it was all about having something else to do - like knitting or making jewelry. Dad just went cold turkey, but I do remember a passion for mints and gum in the beginning. $100 is incentive, but think of the $$ you'll be saving on top of that!! Great choice, wish you the best!!
September 26, 201313 yr First, best of luck! Keep your mind focused and you'll kick the habit before you know it! Second, a co-worker of mine does something called Vaping instead of smoking now. I don't know anything about it but it has helped him quit cigs. Finally, I use smokeless tobacco and am planning to try to slowly cut back and then quit completely. So if you find any tricks, please let me know. I never did the pouch stuff, but I did chew tobacco when I pitched softball in my 20s. Just like George Brett. Actually got to like it. Also smoked a pipe for many years, thinking that pipe-smoking was safer than cigarette-smoking. I was really wrong about that when all the second-hand smoke studies came out. After I quit in the early '90s, the only time I really had the urge was when I was playing poker and drinking beer with the boys. Sometimes a reward system works. Take the $ you spend on cigs and put it in a jar. Then buy yourself a new fishing reel when you haven't smoked in X number of weeks.

I had a very good friend who was a heavy smoker. When he quit, he started to knit or crochet. He would be sitting in front of the TV watching sports or whatever and do that. For him, it was all about keeping his hands busy. It worked! Good luck!
September 27, 201313 yr I smoked through out college; about a pack a day. One of the things that blew me away was the ridiculous amount of money I spent on smokes. 365X$5= Way too much money for anyone to pay. Also, I tried to "ween" myself off with snus and dip. DON'T DO IT! It's a tease. The only way to quit is being really ready to quit. Be disciplined. Look up different stress relief techniques. Most of all, keep your eye on the prize. The honest truth is quitting sucks. It's going to be tough, but it gets better. Just be strong. P.S. let people at home/work know that you are quitting. They'll hold you accountable without even knowing they are doing it.
September 28, 201313 yr I was a 3 pack a day smoker, 5 packs a day if I was programming in my garage office. Didn't plan it. Just woke up on November 22nd, 2004 and said, I'm done. I was 46. Realize that when you quit, you are going to feel like hell for a couple of days. Accept it and treat it like you would the flu. I was already on vacation, so I took NyQuil and stayed in bed. By day three I was fine. I've bought 2 packs since, about 6 years ago. Tried to smoke one each time, put it out after a couple of drags and gave the pack away.
September 28, 201313 yr Good luck HB!!! When I quit I was grumpy and moody for about 2 weeks. I quit cold turkey like RTS and have never looked back. That was about 4 years ago when I quit. You can do it. Mind over matter.
September 28, 201313 yr I quit almost 15 years ago. I'm a strong believer in no crutches. Just quit. Doesn't make sense to me to trade 1 addiction for another.
October 16, 201312 yr 3 weeks this past Sunday, so far so good I always heard that 3 weeks is what it takes to develop or break a habit. Looks like you might have it beat.
