Think how crazy this week would be if there wasn't a play in game

 

In all honesty, the NL Central would be just as crazy. In fact, it would be even more interesting for these final 5 games, as you'd have 3 teams vying for only 2 spots...period.

Bring back great memories of 1990. Went to the Friday afternoon game 2 of the playoffs against the Bucs. Still remember Jethro throwing out Andy Van Slyke at 3rd base. Most exciting baseball game I ever attended.

 

I went to Game 2 of the WS that year. May have been the most exciting game I ever attended.

Including possibly having home field advantage through the playoffs.

 

After last year, the Reds may not want home field advantage.

Last year was a fluke. Anytime you can get home field advantage...take it. I know the Reds just won 2 of 3 in Pittsburgh...but, I'd rather not have to go back there for a 1 game winner-take-all situation.

Which brings up an interesting point...what happens then? In fact, what exactly are all the tie-breaking procedures to determine the playoff spots? Is it pretty much head to head? But, I also thought I heard them talking about a play-in game, to the play-in game (in case Washington tied with Cincinnati or Pittsburgh)?

The St. Louis Post got into that this morning. Pretty interesting stuff. Here is how I understand it... There is a Team A, B & C. With a 3-way tie the team with the best winning percentage vs the other two teams gets to pick what team they want to be. So say the Pirates win the series this weekend in Cincy but there is a 3-Way tie atop the division, then the Pirates would be able to pick first. There would be a strategy to this pick though because Team A would host Team B, with the loser going to the Wild Card play in game and the winner hosting Team C for the division.

 

So say the Pirates choose team C, Cardinals are team A and Reds are Team B. The Cards host the Reds and the Reds win. Then the Reds/Pirates travel to Cincy to play for the division title. The Reds win the division and Atlanta comes to Cincy while the Pirates and Cardinals travel to Pitt to play the Wild Card one game playoff.
