I think that part of the problem is that Coach Glaser was pushed out the 31st floor window and the rumors I hear are that Coach Wolford's fingerprints were all over Coach Glaser's back. The thinking in tiger town was that the only reason X wasn't in total control of Ky football was coaching. If the new coaches come in and the team doesn't look as well coached as they used to be, don't expect the new guy to get a long honeymoon.

 

One thing I could always count on with a glaser coached team was discipline. In the early stages of coach Wolford's reign before the season began I was not seeing that discipline. Three games in, I'm still not noticing that discipline, hopefully things will change.

Little things count. The attention to detail is not apparent. Correct me if I'm wrong, but at the half time X sends out special teams kickers to practice FG's and kick offs... But no special teams coach..... Just seems to me by watching the kids practice one could tell who is focused, ready, hot, cold, etc...... don't understand that....

Something for X fans to keep in mind: Mueller's first year at Highlands was in 1994. He dramatically changed some things, including the O. He passed the ball a whole lot more than Highlands traditionally had (remember, Owen Hauck had been a head coach at Highlands!). A lot of fans were really upset with Mueller that first year, particularly for passing the ball too much. We took lumps that we arguably wouldn't have taken if Mueller hadn't made the changes he did that first year. In his second year we were again playing in the state championship (lost to BG in 1995). The rest is history. My unsolicited advise is to be patient and be supportive. We all know Glaser's offense was a thing of the past. Hopefully for X's sake, by the time X faces T, the bugs in X's passing game will be worked out.

Not really bugs that need to be worked out, qb just needs to perform.

I noticed that. I've never see that before. I really loved the punter for X. I'm not sure why I am so enamored by punters but I love a good punter and that kid was as good as a high school punter that I have seen. Very impressive.

It could happen but if it does I expect X and T to redouble their efforts to improve-----with the result that one or the other will be in the final for many years to come, unless the KHSAA can come up with some new ploy to keep them both out somehow.

Agree. Even the best coaches need time to implement their systems and put their own stamp on the program.

 

Remember that Pitino guy that used to coach at UK? He's a pretty good coach, but he took a HUGE beatdown at the hands of Kansas. It could have been much prettier, but he refused to pull out of his full-court pressure defense to prove a point-- that his teams were going to play that way.

 

If Saint Xavier needs to "get in the game" so to speak, which is what some on here are suggesting (and which I personally have no problem with), then I think having a guy whose played in college and the pros and has received the highest level of coaching is attractive to someone who lives in an "open enrollment" environment and MIGHT have a decision to make.

 

I heard a saying years back during the public/private debate (for HS athletics in Kentucky) that I really liked. It went like this: "100% of our football team is recruited. That's because 100% of the population of our school was recruited." That one came from a Trinity fan.

They had probably seen so many repetitions in practice that they knew who they could and couldn't trust. Short of someone being hurt and sending a trainer out with them or something of that nature, I wouldn't expect a Special Teams Coach to be out there with them unless the Coach's sole responsibility was working with the kickers/punters.

 

If the "Special Teams Coach" were out there with the kickers/punters and the rest of the Special Teams unit was in the locker room, and someone blew an assignment in kickoff or punt coverage and gave up a big score, some people would probably be complaining that they weren't in the locker room with the rest of the unit going over lanes/assignments, etc.

 

Just my opinion on that one, and I'm obviously not as up on St. X's Special Teams situations as you are, but just wanted to offer a different perspective.

You have to build a foundation to have a successful season and Coach Wolford did not do that. He poured a poor base for a season that has such high expectations. That is why the "building" is swaying and looking like it is close to crumbling on Oct 4 if things don't change. Tigers are on the verge of having a much different season than anyone expected. Not good and hope I'm wrong!

It's silly not to give him time.
