Many of you will remember this classic. Trinity, 3-time defending AAAA state champs, holders of a fifty game winning streak, fell to Holy Cross late in the regular season. Holy Cross had a 1A enrollment, but all Louisville schools played AAAA at the time. Trinity would eventually fall to Clark County in the state semifinals while Holy Cross won their district but lost in the second round of the playoffs to Ballard.

 

What can you tell us about this all-time classic Kentucky High School football upset...

Trinity QB Kent Browning had two bad thumbs. Discussion with Coach Lampley reminded me the Shamrock offense moved the ball up and down the field and failed to capitalize on several opportunities to score. There was an issue with the Trinity kicker as I recall. Holy Cross played inspired football that night on Dixie Highway.

 

Trivia: Which team was the last victim in the 50 game streak? I will confirm answer later. My qualifications to answer include providing the list of the 50 teams used to create a commemorative trophy presented to Coach Lampley at the end of the season.

 

Clark County was a special group that year. My St. Xavier friends were not convinced by my words of wisdom regarding Clark County's offensive prowess. I sat with a few of them as they watched the state final at the KFEC stadium in disbelief.

Wow, no responses? The Central Yellowjackets were the 50th victim in the streak. Paducah Tilghman was the first team Trinity defeated (this happens to be the last Trinity varsity game I missed).

I don't recall there being an issue with the Trinity kicker other than he was a Sophomore and not used to crunch time experiences. Felt bad for him.

 

That Trinity team was not near as talented as the three years before so I guess it should not have been a shock that the streak was broken that year. From 91 till the end of the decade was a bit of a drop off for Trinity, the exception being the 94 team which came out of the gates slow but recouped and won state, 95 was a rough year and the next few years pretty much belonged to Male and X, they owned 4A during that time frame.

I only remember being shocked by the score when I saw it the next day. I'm guessing it was one of those deals where Holy Cross caught lightning in a bottle and Trinity didn't play very well, but I didn't see the game.

 

I did see the Trinity/Clark County playoff game later in the season, and Trinity was good but not nearly as good as they had been the few years prior.

 

Others have already mentioned it, but Clark County was the real deal. so much speed in that backfield. They were fun to watch. One of the best Kentucky teams I've ever seen. And, I've seen a lot of Ohio football and the Cardinals would have beaten a lot of the good Ohio teams I've seen over the years.

To me, yes. Male was the big dog in town at that time. I think it had been four YEARS since Trinity had even scored on Male. It was a big deal to beat them. The city champion was expected to win the state title, so to me, yes.

And to be "state" champion the city champ had to beat the county champ, correct? There was no matchup with anyone outside of Jefferson County.
