Weak Kentucky Football Classes

Featured Replies

A negative of 6 classes is that the they are more predictable and constant than with 4 classes. Some say 'diluted' - which is somewhat true since strong teams are now separated at playoff time. As stated above - playoffs are less interesting and far, far to predicable. By the time district play hits in the second half of the season most could fill out the likely brackets and those brackets will mostly play out. Few upsets, few surprises. Maybe a few in the first week, mainly in the 2 vs. 3 games. But mostly things will play out. By week 3 (Region 'Championship' games) the 48 teams left not unique. Is strong predictability bad? Not sure. But it makes for less interesting playoffs.

The 6 classes certainly don't make for exciting playoffs. I feel pretty certain I can say who will win 3 of the 6 classes with no fear of missing.

I agree 100 percent. Six classes of KY football has become boring. Same teams every year. KHSAA needs to look at dividing up teams in perhaps fewer classes based on factors other than enrollment.

Thanks for answering. I respect your opinion although I disagree with it and will state why.

You say BG doesn't have the competition in the class that others do in their classes and you bring up for instance Highlands and Coc Cath, yet is CCH really competition for HHS? How many times in the past 6 years has CCH won state?

You say T has X, yet hasn't BG beaten X? Also as far as CCH, didn't they lose to Conner last year, another 5A school?

That is my point, seems the same criteria you hold to 5A isn't the same criteria you base the other classes with.

CovCath and St. X are perennial powers with several state titles in the last 20 years....cherry picking a game against Conner in horrible weather is a tough way to state your case. Cooper may turn into a recognized, year-in and year-out, power, and that will be great for 5A, but as of now, you don't know. What I do know is Anderson Co. and Cooper (for now) aren't going to get you the respect in the title game that you'd be hoping for.

I know that when BG was in the class with HHS, CCH, and LexCath, the record is pretty clear. Now, with them out, BG is mopping the floor with folks.

One of those three has played Bowling Green the last three years and has gotten as close as 14 points. So you see, things can change. Just like they changed from the time BG beat Highlands and narrowly lost to CovCath to a decade later when both took BG by around 3 TDs.

I'm not talking about Cooper this year.

I don't understand what happened 5 years ago has anything to do with now.

Not a single player on those teams play now. I thought that was pretty obvious but apparently some didn't know players are only in HS for 4 years.

This is HS not the NFL where players stay put for years and years. There is only 1 team that is 31-0 yet they are being compared with the school 5 and 6 years ago.

Are the Steelers the best team in the AFC since they won 2 SB's in the last 8 years?

Also didn't BG win a title back then also? How is CCH a pereniel power? We have to go back 8 years or something since they won anything. Is it because they are in NKY? Bottom line is they haven't made it past regions since before Cooper even opened.

CCH isn't the school I would use in my example if I were you lol.

I think many have the opinion if Cov Cath didn't have to go through Highlands they would've won a few championships over the last 4-5

Couldn't the same be said about several teams in classes? If Highlands wasn't in 4A then wouldn't CCH be in a weak class just as some say BG is? It's that double standard I'm talking about. Facts are facts, if CCH is so great why haven't they won anything the last half dozen years?

You can't have it both ways.

........

I have given it a nanosecond of thought, but my sense on why 5A is perceived as weak is two-fold:

a) There is no 2nd team to at least keep a conversation interesting all year. Trinity has St. X (et al), Highlands has CovCath, LexCath, Boyle that are all past state championship winning programs. 3A has Central and Belfry. Both 2A and 1A have more than one team that has won titles in the last 10 years, so there the hope of a good game somewhere.

b) Bowling Green didn't win a lot of hardware when it was in the same class with Highlands, LexCath and CovCath, now that they are in a separate class they are racking them up. You can understand why people would look at that with some skepticism. Not saying these Purple teams aren't better, maybe they are, but that is conjecture. Between 1990-2006, Bowling Green made the state title game 4 times in 3A and went 1-3 ('94 close loss to CovCath; '95 beat HHS by 16; '05 they get walloped by LexCath; '06 they get hammered by CovCath). Then in 2007, now in 5A, they get hammered by Highlands. However, since HHS, LexCath, and CovCath have dropped to 4A, Bowling Green has boat-raced two non-traditional powers for state titles (Anderson County and Cooper). Easy to see why some would roll their eyes at those two most recent titles.

Maybe the reason Bowling Green is better now than in 2007 is because they worked hard to improve their program. To say that they're winning championships now because they don't have to play Highlands, Covington Catholic, and Lexington Catholic is silly. You guys need to take off your blinders.

This goes in cycles. In the earliest days of 6-class football, Class 3A was very weak. It circled back to being successful. 5A is in a down cycle right now, but it won't last forever. Schools like Warren Central, Christian County, and Franklin County have all had great teams recently, but their talent hasn't (or may not) come back as strong. Conner and Cooper seem strong, as does Harlan County. But to me, the biggest thing that makes a class look weak is if the best team is really strong - and Bowling Green is. Because no one seems to be a threat to Bowling Green, it often speaks to the weakness of the class rather than the strength of the best team.

I don't believe that is always the case, however. Trinity is the best in 6A, but the class isn't great. Highlands is the best in 4A, although most would argue the class is fairly strong. So you have to take it on a year-by-year, class-by-class basis.

I don't follow your 3A was weak and now it's not logic...same teams have met in all but 1 final of current alignment of 3A...nobody really challenging Belfry or Central. Yeah I know Wayne Co played Central tough last year but this is still a 2 team class without much depth.

That is true and CCH would have a few more titles if they weren't in the same class as Highlands. Point is most years, Highlands plays a school that year in year out is one of the best in KY in all classes, in CCH. If Bowling Green were in the 4A or 6A I'm not sure they have any state titles.

Unfortunately none of the classes are very competitive, same schools have won the majority of titles in each of the classes and in many cases the same 1 or 2 teams are always the runner ups.

I'd like to see no more than 5 classes with teams given the option of playing up in class if they chose to.

As I said in my initial post, I knew this point would come up. Maybe they are better, maybe they aren't, hard to prove. Way is easy to prove is when they were playing the 3 aforementioned schools, they weren't getting rings, now they aren't and the jewelry is flowing.

I'm sure they are better, but beating Anderson Co doesn't tell anyone that.

Someone stated that they believe 5A to be a terrible class. Which brought up a question I had.

What makes 5A such a terrible class?

Then I started thinking about other classes in the state, there really isn't any great competition in any of the classes when you look at it.

Most of the classes have 1 dominate team in them. You have your Trinity, you have your BG, you have your Highlands, you have your Central and you have your Mayfield. Class 2A probably is the one that is more of a coin flip than any of the others I guess looking back to when they went to 6 classes a few years back.

So what makes 5A so terrible in some eyes compared to other classes?

They are all equally terrible

Couldn't the same be said about several teams in classes? If Highlands wasn't in 4A then wouldn't CCH be in a weak class just as some say BG is? It's that double standard I'm talking about. Facts are facts, if CCH is so great why haven't they won anything the last half dozen years?

Okay, Lord, first and foremost, you asked a question, I offered an opinion (note, I never banged on 5A, just answered why I thought some may float that opinion), and now you get all excited.

My original point is the other classes have multiple traditionally strong programs (and teams that have won titles [yes, thanks, I'm aware the players aren't the same, but it goes to tradition]) and 5A doesn't. I don't see how you can even venture to debate that.
