Someone stated that they believe 5A to be a terrible class. Which brought up a question I had.

What makes 5A such a terrible class?

 

Then I started thinking about other classes in the state, there really isn't any great competition in any of the classes when you look at it.

Most of the classes have 1 dominate team in them. You have your Trinity, you have your BG, you have your Highlands, you have your Central and you have your Mayfield. Class 2A probably is the one that is more of a coin flip than any of the others I guess looking back to when they went to 6 classes a few years back.

 

So what makes 5A so terrible in some eyes compared to other classes?

Ky should have stayed with 4 classes in football in my opinion.

This goes in cycles. In the earliest days of 6-class football, Class 3A was very weak. It circled back to being successful. 5A is in a down cycle right now, but it won't last forever. Schools like Warren Central, Christian County, and Franklin County have all had great teams recently, but their talent hasn't (or may not) come back as strong. Conner and Cooper seem strong, as does Harlan County. But to me, the biggest thing that makes a class look weak is if the best team is really strong - and Bowling Green is. Because no one seems to be a threat to Bowling Green, it often speaks to the weakness of the class rather than the strength of the best team.

I can see that, but still doesn't explain what makes it a terrible class. No one may beat BG in the class this year, but how is that different from Trinity in 6A or Highlands in 4A?

 

Especially seeing how some of the teams you mentioned beat everyone they played from different classes last year, which I guess makes all those classes even weaker.

I understand your confusion. But now that this thread is made can you please explain why you think 5A is such a terrible class? Their teams are pretty solid last year although you said differently.

I have given it a nanosecond of thought, but my sense on why 5A is perceived as weak is two-fold:

 

a) There is no 2nd team to at least keep a conversation interesting all year. Trinity has St. X (et al), Highlands has CovCath, LexCath, Boyle that are all past state championship winning programs. 3A has Central and Belfry. Both 2A and 1A have more than one team that has won titles in the last 10 years, so there the hope of a good game somewhere.

 

b) Bowling Green didn't win a lot of hardware when it was in the same class with Highlands, LexCath and CovCath, now that they are in a separate class they are racking them up. You can understand why people would look at that with some skepticism. Not saying these Purple teams aren't better, maybe they are, but that is conjecture. Between 1990-2006, Bowling Green made the state title game 4 times in 3A and went 1-3 ('94 close loss to CovCath; '95 beat HHS by 16; '05 they get walloped by LexCath; '06 they get hammered by CovCath). Then in 2007, now in 5A, they get hammered by Highlands. However, since HHS, LexCath, and CovCath have dropped to 4A, Bowling Green has boat-raced two non-traditional powers for state titles (Anderson County and Cooper). Easy to see why some would roll their eyes at those two most recent titles.

The 6 classes certainly don't make for exciting playoffs. I feel pretty certain I can say who will win 3 of the 6 classes with no fear of missing.

Relative to their classes 5A probably has the most watered down product, if that makes sense. Across the board all classes are bad because Kentucky first, has too few teams to support six classes; and, secondly, football in Kentucky is not all that great.

Maybe I misunderstand the question, but I would say that:

 

"Oldtimebaseball's 9 Hour Rules of the Game" Class would be a terrible class.

"Tdyballgame's History and Granduer of Cov Cath" class would be terrible

Anyone's "History of chalking a field" would be tough to handle.

"The art of pumping up a football"......aka "7 to 9, not 8, is enough" (if you laughed at this you are old like me)

Thanks for answering. I respect your opinion although I disagree with it and will state why.

 

You say BG doesn't have the competition in the class that others do in their classes and you bring up for instance Highlands and Coc Cath, yet is CCH really competition for HHS? How many times in the past 6 years has CCH won state?

 

You say T has X, yet hasn't BG beaten X? Also as far as CCH, didn't they lose to Conner last year, another 5A school?

 

That is my point, seems the same criteria you hold to 5A isn't the same criteria you base the other classes with.

If the statement were made saying all the classes were weak I could agree with that. I just don't think 5a is any worse than any of the other classes.

 

Seems to me there is only 1 team good in every class but 2a which can be a coin flip from year to year.
