August 7, 201313 yr IMO the wages given are meaningless as to how the refelct on the employeer without having additional information. The article states that Cesar has been at Costco for 19 years and that he is a fork lift operator. We are not given the same information regarding Colby and Wal-Mart or Cinnamon at Wendy's. Without knowing their position or skills it would be difficult to draw the conclusion that they are underpaid. Someone taking fast food orders or flipping burgers shouldn't be paid $22.80 an hour. ($47,424 per year) Unless Cinnamon is in management at Wendy's I'm not really sure that she has a valid complaint.
August 7, 201313 yr Ok is it just me, but if Cinnamon is her real name, dont you think she could do better in another line of work, shes already got the name for it right?
August 7, 201313 yr Been a big fan of Costco since they first opened a store here in Louisville. Great stuff there. Lots of it.
August 7, 201313 yr Ive only been to cost co once, bought to big pet pillows for the dog, she loves them to death. Maybe if we get one in NKY I will go more.
August 7, 201313 yr It's the old "I want to make a point so I wont report all the information" article. Maybe Cinnamon just started at Wendy's. Maybe Colby calls in sick half the time and is a blooming idiot and is lucky to even still have that job, or like Cinnamon maybe he's fairly new as well. How educated are they? What did Cesar start out making 19 years ago? Probably less that $7.25, depending on what his starting job was. And maybe Cesar is a great employee and worth promoting and keeping within the company. Sometimes these articles that try to "inform" people actually leave one less informed. Example I remember from high school of what an old Soviet Union style article title might look like without really being manipulated, just leaving out important info: "Driver Gorgi Uroff finishes 2nd in big international race. John Smith, American driver, finishes next to last." It's a drag race. It's all in how you spin it.
August 7, 201313 yr I agree with what is stated above, I'd be curious to know what a fork lift operator that's been with Wal-Mart for 20 years makes, that's probably a more fair comparison.

I'll agree that it wasn't a totally fair comparison — they should have gotten a more entry-level Costco person. However, I'm betting there actually wasn't anyone at Wal-Mart or Wendy's they could compare to the guy making $20 an hour because there isn't anyone. Everyone quits long before they ever get to that point because they're such crummy places to work.
August 7, 201313 yr I agree with what is stated above, I'd be curious to know what a fork lift operator that's been with Wal-Mart for 20 years makes, that's probably a more fair comparison. A forklift operator at a Walmart Distribution Center that is there for 19 years is probably making a lot more than that. Local DC starts at $14 and with in 2 years they are at $16, add on 18 more years of regular raises and your way over what Cesar is making. There isn't a Forklift Operator position in a Walmart store, yes they have fork lifts but no one is assigned to just run the forklift all day everyday. I'd say the average 19-20 year tenured Walmart store employee makes $15-$25 depending on position and how they have advanced during that time.

Many are making in the $22-27 range.

As far as Cinnamon is concerned though, don't know what Colby does, you can't compare an entry level fast food worker to a forklift driver. Below the pic, it also states "workers hold similar positions...". No they don't. I've worked fast food, also drove forklifts...very different jobs. Now, Colby may drive a forklift for Wal-Mart, article doesn't say so we don't know. Heck, as far as I'm concerned, you could just as well call in a contrasting article rather than a comparison with what little info is given.

August 7, 201313 yr How many are full-time and get insurance? How many are "regular" employees and not managers? All of the ones I mentioned are hourly "Regular" employees and all are full-time. Stores average over 50% full-time and in some stores with lower turnover it is as high as 70%. Managers are salaried therefore there isn't an hourly rate for them. Insurance for the employee is available for as little about $20 per paycheck. I had family coverage for about $60 a paycheck, compare that to almost anywhere else...I think that was a pretty good deal. Average wage in KY is just over $13.00. I know of an associate that is still at Walmart that makes nearly $28 per hour and has well over $500,000 in company funded profit sharing and 401K...she was NEVER a manager and has worked in the same position for the entire time. Walmart isn't perfect by no stretch of the imagination...I know, I was there for 30 years...but it no where near the evil monster many would like to portray it to be. Walmart doesn't even go out and "Comp" shop because they thought that it looked bad if Walmart store was checking prices at their only competition if that competition wasn't a national chain.

They start getting more ammo on the shelves and I might buy your story.
