July 22, 201313 yr What is your advice on booking flights? Do prices get cheaper the longer you wait? I have a month before my scheduled trip but haven't got a flight yet because an waiting for rates to go down. Are any of the travel sites better than the next? Is it better to go directly thru Delta? How do you get the best rate?
July 22, 201313 yr Within a 30 day timeframe rates will only get more expensive. My suggestion would be to search for your flight on Travelocity (which shows all flights available by all airlines) and then book the flight directly with that airline.
July 22, 201313 yr We had a thread about this about a month ago with a lot of good info in it. Seemed as though Tuesdays and Wednesday were the cheapest days to book. Also flying out of Lexington was surprisingly very cheap if they had your destination.

So the idea of waiting until 2 weeks before my scheduled trip to see if they have empty seats to fill and will lower their prices in half isn't going to happen?

Also flying out of Lexington was surprisingly very cheap if they had your destination. Lexington was actually $100 higher, but Columbus and Dayton were $100 cheaper. Am just used to CVG and will only fly out of there. Do you have a link to that thread you talked about? Thanks a bunch.
July 22, 201313 yr I travel a lot (as I am sure others do on here too) and I travel many times last minute, and at times you can get great deals, with either the airlines or the Priceline name you own price (the latter you just pick the dates of travel and they will set you up with the time, if your bid is accepted). But I wouldn't recommend waiting if you are not prepared to pay a little more, as it can happen. But I have been lucky at times finding 1 seat, as that is all I need, a few days before the flight at better price. Plus it depends on where you are flying to, and how the load history is in that flight. But also 3-4 weeks+ out you can get good deals, some of the best too. Some airlines are making it a little more difficult to shop for flights on sites other than their own. As was already pointed out, check the airlines and other travel sites Tuesday and Wednesday very early in the AM. I know I went back and forth, but that is my experience while booking flights.
July 22, 201313 yr So the idea of waiting until 2 weeks before my scheduled trip to see if they have empty seats to fill and will lower their prices in half isn't going to happen? No, and it makes no sense to me. I have checked flights minutes before they are scheduled to depart and the price is as high as ever. You would think you could just go to the counter and buy a cheap ticket in the hopes of an airline unloading the ticket but it does not work that way.

Haven't taken a flight for many years and thought this may have changed because airlines don't want to send out half empty flights. Thought I may luck into a $100-200 flight by waiting.
July 22, 201313 yr So the idea of waiting until 2 weeks before my scheduled trip to see if they have empty seats to fill and will lower their prices in half isn't going to happen? That is a bad idea. These days it seems the closer you get the more expensive the tickets are, I don't understand why that is, but it was the case for me this year.
July 22, 201313 yr I normally fly southwest because they have always been the cheapest. With Southwest I've found the closer your flight date gets the higher the ticket price gets. Normally 3-4 months out is the best deal you will get with them.
July 22, 201313 yr I don't know if you'll find anything cheep this close to departure, but we had good luck using KAYAK in the past.
