July 22, 201313 yr Runs given up by Homer in his 9 loses. 7, 1, 4, 7, 6, 4, 4, 4, 3. Yeah. He's killing it this year... The Reds are averaging 4.34 per game. If they get to that and the bullpen holds???
July 22, 201313 yr I wouldn't have said a word until Dusty's ignorant post game comments... So you were fine with leaving him in there?
July 22, 201313 yr "People don't understand, but it doesn't matter to me because I'm going to do what I think is right for my team and right for him." That is what has me fired up and ready to rant for 4 hours this afternoon. Those two things aren't one in the same you idiot...
July 22, 201313 yr So you were fine with leaving him in there? Thought he probably should have gone to get him before Tabata, but wasn't overly fired up about it. Still had good life on his fastball and didn't seem fatigued even though the pitch count was high. Knowing his history of getting frustrated over things like infield hits and seeing eye singles, I would have went to the pen in that spot so he didn't leave one up to get hit hard. You try to get a guy a win when he is struggling to get through 5, but you have a 9-4 lead. You don't put the win in jeopardy to pad individual stats in a game like yesterday. Go for the throat, get the sweep and head west. Stupid all around...

July 22, 201313 yr Generally, if we are talking how to manage a 162 game baseball season, I agree with Crash's (and Dusty's) approach. I don't agree with UKMF that you manage every game like it is must win - not in baseball in a 162 game season. But yesterday was a must win game and you manage that game like a playoff game where you can't worry about a player being mad at you over a decision. You do what you have to do to win that game.

I'm not saying you manage every second of every game in that manner no matter what....There's some games where you're up big or down big, or get into marathon type extra inning games, that you aren't going to do so. You're going to get guys work that maybe need it, maybe rest some guys, maybe leave a guy with a long hitting streak in to let him try to keep it going, etc., etc. Yesterday's game was there for the taking against a divisional opponent that happens to be ahead of you in the thick of a playoff race. You better be doing what's in the best interest of the team, not trying to get an individual pitcher a W.
July 22, 201313 yr I would argue that holding off as long as possible to go to your bullpen, with the stretch of games they have, is doing what's in the best interest of your team.

RE: Bold above ...You say that here, but that is not what I see in your posts every day in Reds threads. The rest of the post, you and I agree on.
July 22, 201313 yr Author RE: Bold above ...You say that here, but that is not what I see in your posts every day in Reds threads. The rest of the post, you and I agree on. I think you go into every game with the mindset of doing whatever it takes to win. That can obviously change once the game gets underway and starts to play out.
July 22, 201313 yr I would argue that holding off as long as possible to go to your bullpen, with the stretch of games they have, is doing what's in the best interest of your team. The thing is, they could win every game over the next 10 days, and theoretically, not gain any ground against the Pirates (who could, in theory, win every single one of their games too.) What hurt yesterday, was the fact that it was a 2 game swing with just one loss. Going into the series, most Reds fans would've been happy knowing that they would win 2 of 3. But, when you win the first two, in this particular instance, you almost HAVE to go for the jugular and pull off the sweep. If it's April, then no....still plenty of time left. But, coming out of the AS break, with two teams ahead of you...I think you play it a little different. Not only would it be a huge statement for the Reds, but also for the Pirates. I'd have told Homer at the beginning of the inning, "This'll probably be your last inning, so leave nothing in the tank. If you get in any trouble, we'll come get you." You've shown your confidence in sending him back out there, but also allowed for the possibility that he may not finish the inning. And, as GT has already stated, if he's that fragile that he can't understand the importance of this particular game...

July 23, 201313 yr Aha! And that is a trait SERIOUSLY lacking with this present Redlegs team. That's where they miss Rolen. And Ludwick to a lesser degree. Votto and Phillips lead the team now, and they're just too nice a guys. Team needs some meanness in the lineup.

Agree, they need a Vaughn or a Charlton. In the Reds' hey day they had Pete. He urinated off everybody on the opposing team.
