Pirates at Reds 7/19 - 7/21 Series

I heard a bunch of people complaining about this yesterday. They were yelling and screaming at Dusty at the game about leaving Bailey in too long. I laughed. At the time, they had 1 hit and 1 gifted run. Giving up 3 runs wasn't the reason they lost the game. If making Dusty the scapegoat makes you guys feel better about this team, so be it.

It's not making him the scapegoat, or about the game yesterday. It's his alarming comments where he said he puts the best interest of his individual players over the best interest of his team. That's just pure ignorance, and there's no place for that managing philosophy in professional sports.

"People don't understand, but it doesn't matter to me because I'm going to do what I think is right for my team and right for him."

That is what has me fired up and ready to rant for 4 hours this afternoon. Those two things aren't one in the same you idiot...

Read the whole post before you jump because I agree with you, as I posted above in this thread.

As a general philosophy over the course of a season, Dusty thinks standing behind his players is best. He believes the other Reds players will look at him supporting Homer and say, Dusty has our back. He will support me the same way and give me every opportunity to succeed.

BUT ... there are times when you manage to win a game and not do what is best over a season. Yesterday was one of those games. You are right, in that game and situation the best decision to win that game for the team was to replace Homer.

This is my big concern with Dusty. I wonder if he will make the tough moves he needs to do in the playoffs to win, even if it ticks players off. When I mentioned this previously, GT, you came back at me and said Dusty did ok in the playoffs last year. That was a playoff type must win game yesterday and Dusty didn't handle it right.

Where did he say that? The only thing I saw was, "...I'm going to do what I think is right for my team and right for him."

And when those two things are opposites (like yesterday)? He goes with what's right for the player. That's just stupid.

Not saying I know what UKMF is thinking but IMO the "right for him" is what have people irked (me as well). He should have stopped with "right for my team" as what is right for Bailey wasn't what was right for the team.

Again, where did he say he "puts the best interest of his individual players over the best interest of his team?"

I'm assuming you think leaving Bailey in for 140+ pitches to get a no hitter was in the best interest of Bailey, too. How many times has Bailey or Latos been pulled in that situation with a lead, only to see it be given up by the bullpen?

It 100% has to do with yesterday's call. If anyone here doesn't think a manager makes decisions for the best interest of the player AND the team, has never managed anything. You see it as a loss. Bailey sees it as a manager with confidence in him to get outs. If you sacrifice one win over the confidence for a pitcher to get many more wins, so be it. (Sacrificing that win because of an anemic offense, not the starting pitcher)

And again, like every other complaint you guys come up with, offense is the issue. They had 1 hit at that point.

You would jeopardize your pitcher's confidence by pulling him in a tough situation where he has been one of your best guys all season?

When did Bailey throw 140+ pitches for a no-hitter?

And yes, it's complete and utter stupidity to ever put the interest of a player over that of the team. The only thing that matters is winning the game. As a manager your sole job is to do what is in the best interest of the team to achieve that goal. If that means pulling a pitcher in a tight situation and he gets his panties in a wad over it, so be it.

When your offense is struggling to score, you know what you don't do? You don't leave in a pitcher that is "frustrated" when it is well documented that said pitcher can implode at any moment in tight situations.

I see it as a loss that puts them back to 5 games out of 1st and instead of 1 game behind the Pirates they are now 3 back. Dusty managed that game to get Homer a win and it cost him and his TEAM an important divisional game against a team above them in the standings. Irresponsible, and ignorant. At the same time...

You would jeopardize your pitcher's confidence by pulling him in a tough situation where he has been one of your best guys all season?

If his confidence is that fragile, he sucks anyway...

Crash, are you really saying it was in the best interest of the team to leave Bailey in yesterday?

Runs given up by Homer in his 9 loses. 7, 1, 4, 7, 6, 4, 4, 4, 3. Yeah. He's killing it this year...

I was fine either way. If he gets out without runs no one says a word. Hindsight is always easier.

I wouldn't have said a word until Dusty's ignorant post game comments...
