July 12, 201313 yr He must of written this back in April to show he isn't a racist, right? Why Gay Marriage Isn?t the ?60s Civil Rights Fight | The American Conservative The Southern Avenger. What a radical-racist monster. How is any of that not exactly what I talked about — an effort by Southern whites to downplay the South's role in slavery? Sure, it could be argued that the federal government allowed slavery to go on a lot longer than it should have, but no matter whether the feds drew the line in 1776, 1820, 1840 or 1860, the Southern states were going to pitch a fit and secede. They were seceding over the right to enslave people to support their economic system.
July 12, 201313 yr Does he wear his Stars and Bars rasslin' mask when he writes these columns quoting T.S. Eliot? It's going to seem like I'm piling on now... T.S. Eliot was of course a guy who ultimately left the United States forever and became a British citizen and was a noted anti-Semite. Edited July 12, 201313 yr by Getslow
July 12, 201313 yr A United States Senator employs a guy who actively supported the dissolution of the union and wrote that a non-white America would "cease to be America"? No problem with that whatsoever? For some strange reason I'm reminded of that guy in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" that got turned into a newt. "I got better."
July 12, 201313 yr That his ideology attracts racists? How do you differ from the big L verse the little l? You can go back in history and find every ideology known to man has enslaved or sought the enslavement or elimination of one race or the other -- some of the recent atrocities have been under those that have been called themselves progressives, socialists, or communists (Hitler, Stalin, Mao) Are they not just as guilty? Why do people who hold a pro-government view not looked down upon as racists? After all, you cannot enslave a population without having legal force over them. Legal force is obtained by having the government on your side. And what isn't presidential? I'm curious to read your thoughts. Like I said, Hunter said these things nearly 2 decades ago. And as stupid as what he said, it's with his quotes taken out of context. Shall we delve into previous presidents past? Snorting cocaine, starting political careers with weathermen members, infidelity, etc. To say presidential candidates are above the fray is not reality. They're human. They, and their aides, will make human mistakes. The ideology of the Paul's unfortunately may attract those with racist thoughts (and historically, so do all the others). Oh well. We can't control that and its not like he's craving their support. I'm sure if you asked him, he wouldn't want it. The main point of the Pauls ideology is that government cannot and should not infringe on an individuals rights through the force of government. No matter what a racist may want, supporting Paul will never enable them to dominate one race or another because in order to do that, you must gain legal force over another race. That would directly contradict everything they've fought for, voted for, and in the case of Ron Paul, spent almost their entire career fighting against. Calling them a racist is a tool the left and the moderate R's have used, and in Rand's case, continue to use to discredit them. Rand is a threat to the left because they are, for the past decade, the side that's been good on civil liberties. Since Obama has taken office, they've abandoned that view. To the right, he's a threat because he doesn't believe we have to be foreign policy hawks. He scares the crap outta both sides. This story isn't about Jack Hunter. It's about the push to label those who hold the belief and advocate for the most localized form of self-government -- the individual controlling themselves, state's rights, etc -- you're a racist. Whatever. Are you not a fan of Rand? If someone is a Libertarian then they are a member of the party. Someone who is a libertarian believes in a certain ideology. From a lot of personal experience I have found things Habib said to be true at least w/in the state regarding the LP. However, the same cannot be said for the candidates the LP has ran and I can't recall an election where I haven't voted for the LP when the choice was there. In fact, besides Gatewood I can't think of a vote I've felt better about than Gary Johnson last year. Not to trivialize a well-thought out post but most of this is pointing out that others have been associated with atrocities over history. As they say, two wrongs don't make a right. Just like with his dad, Rand has some associations I'm not fond of. I meant its not Presidential to hire someone like this Hunter fellow with a scary past relating to race. Why take on a controversy you don't have to? The story may not be about Hunter, but by hiring him Rand has definitely made a story. When Rand first burst on the scene as a candidate I was a HUGE fan as evidenced by some old posts in here. Since then, things he has done --- this hiring for instance --- have given me reservations. My post is definitely not a tool from the right or left. You aren't going to find a more libertarian-minded poster on this forum. This is coming from someone who should be at the very core of Rand's base. Edited July 12, 201313 yr by formerkywrestler
July 14, 201313 yr I know you aren't, but most who are bashing Paul in here were silent or supportive of Obama when his associations with those guys were brought up. I just think the irony is funny. And yes, he should distance himself from this guy, but if it didn't hurt President Obama, I really doubt it'll hurt him if he decides to run. If I'm "silent" about slights against Obama then it's just not my fight.
July 14, 201313 yr He must of written this back in April to show he isn't a racist, right? Why Gay Marriage Isn?t the ?60s Civil Rights Fight | The American Conservative The Southern Avenger. What a radical-racist monster. If Rand Paul expects to be elected President of The United States Of America, hiring guys who wear Stars'n'Bars 'rasslin' masks ain't the way to go about it. In fact, it's the exact opposite of what to do, when you consider his goal is to attract minority voters.
July 14, 201313 yr So... Rand hires a guy who, as a shock jock, ten years ago, at age 18 or 19, makes a bunch of stupid statements -- none of which involve support for slavery or discrimination against blacks. That same guy disavows the statements and says he doesn't feel that way today. I guess I'd like to see something a bit more current about this guy's views (ohh, wait, he said he disavows the statements). I know a lot of people that do, and say, stupid stuff at age 18 or 19. First, I'm much more interested with how Rand feels about issues, than I am about his staff does. Second, I'm not concerned about what someone does or says at 19 years old, and am much more interested in what they say and believe today. Third, and tangentially related, I find the media's reaction to Paula Dean to be absolutely ridiculous -- but, I guess I'm a person who recognizes that people can do and say stupid things and learn from their mistakes and evolve. We vote for the candidate and who they are today, not who they were in their teens. I personally appreciate the fact that Rand recognizes as much, and it says a lot to me about his character by not bending to the media and reacting by firing an employee for something that person said a decade ago in their teens.

The guy was 29/30 and older when he said it. As recent as 5/6 years ago he was saying and doing these things. And he did more than say things, he actively worked for a group that was trying to bring about the overthrow of the US Government in southern states.
July 18, 201313 yr Democrats call on McConnell to condemn Paul for employing 'Southern Avenger' | Politics and Government | Kentucky.com Guy advocates for Southern Independence and said Lincoln was like Saddam and would want to "be with" Hitler if they had ever met. How can Paul possibly justify associated with this guy? After seeing people Obama associated with, this is small potatoes.
July 18, 201313 yr After seeing people Obama associated with, this is small potatoes. Honestly, I've seen no serious presidential candidate since I've been alive take on -- as a paid staffer -- someone that toxic. No, not even Obama, despite your hatred for him. Not even Dubya, despite my hatred for him. You're allowing your dislike of Obama to cloud your judgement on this issue, unless you didn't have good judgement to begin with. Rand Paul is the most confounding politician I've come across in my lifetime, in terms of how I go back and forth on him. Sometimes he seems intensely brilliant. Others, not so much. Kind of like the toilet issue and, well, this one. Nobody with any sense in their brain attaches themselves to someone so out there, someone with the ability to alienate voters on both side of the aisle, unless Paul is hoping to prove some wacky point. This guy makes Karl Rove look like a moderate. For what it's worth, I cast my vote for Gary Johnson last time out, so spare me the ideological beatdown you're dying to give me.
July 22, 201313 yr According to Huffingtonpost, the Southern Avenger has resigned from Rand Paul's staff. If Paul is serious about a presidential run, he's going to have to defend this hiring for quite some time.
July 23, 201313 yr How long did the guy work for him, 2 weeks? Will be forgotten quickly although I'm sure it will be brought up if he runs. Just has to say "I made a mistake, I quickly corrected the mistake."
