It was posted barker and bonnafon were the 2 favorites. Based on what you said I don't understand how walker, the tigers leading rusher the past 2 years wouldn't be considered a favorite.

 

I'd say it has to do with lack of publicity. I don't think most who vote know that. His name doesn't get mentioned a lot. I just think it's going to be hard for a running back without a big scholarship to beat out two QBs going to in-state schools with a lot of publicity.

I think our very own Matt Elam has a great shot at winning Mr. Football. He is currently ranked as a 5 Star and 10th overall player in the nation by 247 sports. He currently holds offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Louisville, Kentucky, Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Indiana, Purdue. His stock recently blew up after dominating the big boys at Alabama's Ellite Prospect Camp. Saban called him the best defensive lineman prospect in the nation.

 

Barker and Matt have both been invited to play in the US Army All American game. I believe it definitely comes down to these two athletes. However, Im pulling for another defensive guy to win! It's time for the big guys to get some love! :ylsuper:

Drew Barker could add to the list of UK Quarterbacks that have won Mr. Football though. I think this trend helps him out with the voters.

But, Deuce Finch won the award as St. X's running back in 2008... he was a three year starter as well... history could repeat on that end for Walker.

Matt Elam is the best player in Kentucky. Although its hard for lineman to win Mr Football. I think Barker will probably win the award, but Elam is the best overall player in the state. I would love to see him win the award.

 

Then Matt Elam better committ to the Ky Wildcats. Because if Drew Barker makes to the 3rd/4th or even the finals, it's his to lose....IMO!

I was looking at 2009 winner, Antonio Andrew's stats. I believe he was possibly the last and perhaps the only QB to make the 50/50 club (please name others if you know who they are). He finished with 6,733 total yards and 106 TD's (50 passing/56 rushing). If Drew has a year similar to last year, he will finish with 9,902 total yards and 109 TD's (50 passing/59 rushing). A nice playoff run could push the total number well over 10K. I think the 50/50 club is a very small group for QB's. If he can do that, I think he becomes the first player in Conner High School history to be awarded Mr. Football. This would be a good thing for NKY.

Ed I agree with you, its difficult for a lineman to win. Since 1987 only 1 d lineman has won MR. Football, zero o lineman, 1 tight end. Im looking forward to watching Elam play when HHS visits.

This is a great example of how QBs have an edge in Mr. Football voting. The 2009 field was loaded with quality choices for Mr. Football but the QB won.

I'm not going to speak for PP, but given the numbers Andrews was worthy. But, I think the problem is, how do you compare an OL with a QB, or QB with a DB, or a RB with a LB? Yes, Andrews was a great player and did things that not many have done. But, what if a LB was the best LB you've ever seen, how would you compare that LB with Andrews?

I'm incredibly biased and felt like Rees Macshara should have gotten it but I think that there were 2-4 people who could have gotten it that year. Andrews, Collinsworth, Macshara, the RB from LexChristian was that year also. Seems like there may have even been another 1-2 who were worthy.

90% of the voters are not going to see Elam play more than a game or two. Plus you can't look at a newspaper and see how dominant he was. That's why it's going to be hard for him to win with 2 D1 QBs putting up big numbers that are easy to wrap your brain around.

Barkers to lose, but at the end of the season it wouldn't surprise me to see Fant among those talked about.
