Man arrested after detaining vandals until police arrived

Man Charged for Detaining Kids Who Vandalized Home

A man who says he caught four boys vandalizing his father-in-law's home has been charged with child endangerment after corralling them in a closet until police arrived.

Jesse Daniels was arraigned on four counts of endangering the welfare of a child after authorities say he interrupted the vandalism at the empty home in the Wayne County village of Clyde, midway between Rochester and Syracuse.

Daniels, 53, said that he heard pounding coming from the home next door the night of June 8. The house is empty while Daniels renovates it for his father-in-law. Daniels said he went to investigate while his wife called 911. He said he found four boys, ages 8 and 10, inside with hammers. He took a hammer from one, then stuck the boys in a closet until officers arrived, he said.

"I was fortunate that they were in that room that had a closet, so I put them in the closet," he said. "I said, 'Listen, you guys are staying here until the police come, period.'"

Their parents said Daniels handled the boys roughly and threatened them with the hammer.

The damage to the home included holes in the walls, broken windows and graffiti derogatory to women spray-painted on walls. Daniels estimated that the damage to his father-in-law's property exceeds $40,000.

He said he believed the boys committed the vandalism in retaliation for Daniels' wife telling them earlier in the day to stay off the couple's property.

The boys have been charged with burglary and criminal mischief. Their cases are being handled in Wayne County Family Court.

Paul Bowler, the father of two of the boys, told the station that there are no excuses for his sons' actions.

"I understand they were in the wrong, but there are other ways to handle it," he said. "He (Daniels) knew who the kids were. It's not like they were strangers. And send the kids home and call the cops then. You don't sit there and torment them and tell them you're going to bash their skulls in with a hammer."

Bowler said Daniels grabbed the neck of one of his sons and left a mark. He said that his boys are traumatized and that Daniels should have faced more charges. Daniels counters that he was just trying to protect his family.

Should this man be charged?

I hate stories like this. Although 8 and 10 is pretty young.

If he knew who the kids were he probably should've contacted their father rather than putting them in a closet.

I hope a judge dismisses the charges against the man who detained the kids. I wonder if the charge was there because he wasn't the actual property owner.

I can't get the story link to open so I need specific details on how his detainment of the kids went down. Obviously, I want to say good for him. But if we was excessive in his actions, then he should have been charged.

I pasted the story above. He just herded them into a closet and made them stay there until the police arrived. If caught them in the act of causing $40,000 worth of damage to his father-in-laws home.

IMO even if he knew who they were, if he sends them home and then calls the police the parents are going to say that 8 and 10 year old boys couldn't have done that much damage and that their little angels didn't do it. By keeping them at the scene of the crime it strengthens his claim as to what they had done to the home.

Closet was probably a bad idea. Although, not sure what the alternative would be.

So if I follow this correctly, he is arrested because he detained them, but the kids had a weapon, and legally he could have shot them and killed them and it would have been ok?

If my son had been caught doing this, being put in a closet and threatened with a hammer would have been the least of his problems. I would also be to ashamed of his actions to want to create more publicity about how stupid my son was by pressing charges on the man that caught him. I would be different if he had actually hurt or injured them, but he did not.

So what, he scared them a little bit.

Even if he grabbed one to keep him from running away, who cares.

Obviously none of them were hurt. His intention was to hold them till police came, not to hurt them.

I don't think he should be charged with anything.

The father's defense of his boys is everything that is wrong with parents today.

Winner winner chicken dinner!!!

Didn't the father say there was no defense for his two sons actions?

Yes, but father is also the one complaining because is little darling was told to stand in a closet until the police arrived. If his son was injured then yeah you say something, but outside of that no. The man didn't harm his child and all he has is the child's version of what happened. If I was in his place the man's actions would be the last thing on my mind in this situation.

Detaining the kids is one thing, telling them you're going to bash their skulls in with a hammer is a different story.
