June 19, 201313 yr The kids needed to be scared. No charges unless he hit them with the hammer... and 30 years ago, hitting them with the hammer may have been acceptable. If not by this guy, the father may have asked to borrow it to teach the kids a lesson. The parent should be focused on their kids actions way more than on what this guy did to stop them.
June 19, 201313 yr The dad will likely file a civil suit in the hopes he can recoup some money that he is now liable for because his two hellions and his buddies trashed a house. I hope the judge sees through that. I don't care what anyone else thinks here, I'd have beaten the tar out of mine. And my dad would have done the same. Until that is appropriate in the home, behavior like this will continue. Heck, if you have kids do this, and feel bad about being the bad guy, sign a waver and give me a call.
June 19, 201313 yr Author Detaining the kids is one thing, telling them you're going to bash their skulls in with a hammer is a different story. We don't know what he actually said or didn't say...in the heat of the moment he may have said something like that. I still wouldn't have much of an issue with that threat if I was a parent unless he attempted to do it.
June 19, 201313 yr Author I would think that if the kids did this after being told to stay out of the yard, this probably isn't the first time they have acted out. Seems to be a bit of an over reaction for the kids, guessing there are other violent events in their backgrounds. Edited June 19, 201313 yr by Jumper_Dad

No doubt my dad would have beat the tar out of me as well, and the same thing goes if my kids had done that. Like I said I have no problem with the guy detaining the kids. The threat of hitting the kids in the skull with the hammer ( and I'm sure it was said just to scare the kids, and because he was extremely pissed off) is where he crossed the line, and what probably cost him being charged.
June 19, 201313 yr I would think that if the kids did this after being told to stay out of the yard, this probably isn't the first time they have acted out. Seems to be a bit of an over reaction for the kids, guessing there are other violent events in there backgrounds. And I'm willing to bet the kids have never been disciplined by their dad. Kids that know and fear what their dad would do to them if they did such a thing would have never done this.
June 20, 201313 yr If I am their father, I am so thankful that he didn't shoot my son. The paper could have read that armed intruders were killed after being caught in a home. They had hammers. Kids this age are being kicked out of school for aiming a pencil and saying bang. These kids broke into a house and had hammers. This could have went so much worse. I would like to say that my son knows better than to do something like this and he probably does, but if by chance he happened to have a lack in judgment, he would be wishing he was still in that closet.
June 20, 201313 yr Who cares if he threatened them. These punks broke into his house that he was fixing up for his father in law and tearing up what he has been working on for weeks/months. He entered the house not knowing who the heck was in there and his adrenaline was pumping. Little hoodlums are lucky he didn't shoot them. I have no problem with him threatening them or grabbing them by the neck and shoving/throwing them in a closet. Only problem I have is he got arrested and the dad sticking up for his sons.
June 20, 201313 yr If he knew who the kids were he probably should've contacted their father rather than putting them in a closet. True but it sure sounds like the father would have denied it and made excuses for the little punks.
June 20, 201313 yr Detaining the kids is one thing, telling them you're going to bash their skulls in with a hammer is a different story. The only indication that the threat was made was from those fine upstanding young men. If he denies it I'm believing him.
