Good maybe Holmes middle won't get screwed now state wide format!

My problem with this is that we are now turning over a potential mess to a group that has proven repeatedly that they cannot manage the mess they already have!!

I'm against it. The Salt River Conference already regulates kids that are held back and it is fair. If you get held back you sit out the year unless you can prove you were held back for medical reasons. Transfers also have to be valid moves if you transfer from one Salt River Conference school to another. If anything, regulating the rules will take longer since it won't be handled at a local level anymore.

If there is a transfer rule, unless it is written differently than the current HS rule it would impact very few kids. The only kids who would be impacted are those who play varsity sports as a MS kid. There are very few boys who participate in varsity sports as a MS student. There are a few more girls, but even amongst girls it would not impact all that many (of course when it does impact one it could be significant).

I am interested to see where this goes. I do believe it would be good to have some consistencies in middle school with number of games, hold backs or at least age requirements should be consistent.

I wonder if they will regulate the seasons... Right now there are a lot of off-season sports in central Ky. middle schools. Girls basketball plays in the fall. Soccer is in the spring. Middle school volleyball was recently placed in the winter by the Bluegrass Conference.

In 2016, 7th graders will have to designate their high school, and from that point forward the transfer rules will take into effect. Thats the very simple summary of the rule that was passed back in 2010 or 2011. If I get time I will try to find the verbatim regulation for it.

Fair enough...but making a high school decision is difficult enough when kids are 13...and now they're expecting them to make a relatively final decision on that when they're 11. Ridiculous.

How does the new proposal affect the Parochial schools that field JR. High Football programs, even though they don't have middle schools. In NKY that would affect NewCath, Brossart, CovCath and potentially Holy Cross? (Kids other than those from Holy Cross play Jr. High Footbal)

 

Will they be able to particpate in the same league's? How will this affect who plays MS football at NewCath but basketball at St. Mary or St. Joes? Which High School are they locked into?

It will be up to each league/association to set the standards on if parochial are allowed to play in them.

 

 

If you read the regulation, as long as parochial schools follow all the regs, there is no issue with them playing school based teams. (in a sense the Parochials are school based teams- all the kids attend a parochial school--, however the district/dioceses has chosen how those athletic teams will be formed.)

 

Similar to some school districts that do not have true middle schools, but 2-3, k-8 schools that combine together to play as a team, like Bell Co for example.

no, KDE wouldn't have oversight over non school teams, leagues and such. Now that doesn't mean that state legislatures couldnt push something through that would require similar training, background checks and other safety concerns for these leagues to be able to operate in the state of KY.

Unless they plan to attend a parochial High School or live in a county with open enrollment, isn't this already happening by virtue of living within the boundaries of a particular High School district? I guess I'm saying for instance, what's the point of a kid who lives in Boone Co High Schools district designating that he will attend Boone Co HS in the 7th- or any- grade? Kind of redundant isn't it?

Beyond that, as we've come to see, even living in a school district does not prevent kids and/or parents from claiming a hardship and attending a different school. Seems to be a totally unenforcable regulation.

Let's be honest this decision is based on $ period. The KHSAA will say it is about kids and coaches etc., but I for one don't buy it. There are many more middle schools than high schools in KY who will all probably be paying dues etc. The KHSAA want a piece of the MS pie...IMO they don't even do what they do now very well, so now add more schools to the mix! Sounds about right...UGH!
