Come in Clyde I can't get no love. Kidding my1st year starting at QB in "93" George Duval was 1 of the best backs in the state. Trevor Stellman was solid only because he was my ball boy and I taught him everything. Kidding again. Conner had some solid players in the 90's.

 

I couldn't remember George's name. Really good but Melvin Miles was and still is the best running back to play at Conner.

I think two sure picks for Beechwood are Brandon Berger and Bailie Morlidge.

Top of my list for CovCath would be a guy who many never saw play, as most on this board weren't even born yet but....

 

Rick Hornsby was/is the best RB that I have ever seen play at CovCath period!

Greg Ponzer was a better all-around football player than Alan. Alan was a stud back but Greg did it all on both sides.

 

Thanks for pointing that out, I was a bit too young to remember either one play. I heard Ponzer was a bear on the hardwood so I can only imagine how tough he was on the field. I still remember my dad had black/white photo of Greg, sporting his Hanover uniform, hanging on his office wall. Mr. Ponzer had a nice fro for a white guy.

I was young when Miles played but I heard some great stories about him. And I did all right with Trevor. Lol Great kid and a heck of a QB. Couldn't have been more proud when he broke my record for most TD's passes in a season. Of course now that record belongs to a certain QB what's his name again oh yeah Barker. And congrats for him on the elite11.

Rick taught my typing class at Cov. Cath. in the mid-70's. Great teacher. He took teaching typing very seriously. Bordered on life and death. We got the message pretty quick about how he became a great player. We stared at the keys, shut up and typed for every minute of every class. We loved him. (I am old enough to have tagged along with my older brother to a few of Rick's games.) His nick name "freight train" was well deserved.

Ha, ha ..... there was a pretty good QB back in the day ... it seemed like he enjoyed walking up to the line of scrimmage ... and put the "mute" on the defense ... wonder who that guy was?

 

Good call ... as of right now ... George Duvall is in the top three (and IMO .. #1).

Other names in the mix: Anyone named Shotwell, Troy Cole, Duane Hudson, Dustin Alvey, Cody Wolf, David Morris and a ton of others.

Duval played against a much tougher schedule .. with higher yardage totals his senior year.

He could run around you ... but most importantly ... he ran over people when everyone in the vicinity of the stadium knew where he was going.

There were more than a few games in 1983 where Miles "disappeared" for a period of time in a game .. where the Shotwell's picked up the load.

Good example: In 1993 SK was 7-1 coming to Conner. 7-7 at halftime ... 310 yards later (in 2 quarter for Duval) it was 49 to 7.

A lot of the load was also shared by #25 Dutch Kennedy, especially the state championship game, when Miles played only about 5 plays.
