Notwithstanding the confederate union's use of the word during a very ugly part of our history, Yankee for the most was and still is considered a Patriotic word. I'm sure Yankee probably offends a few folks who are still flying a confederate flag. But the comparison of Yankee and Redskin is weak at best, and using such a weak reference to defend the use of Redskin doesn't really support your argument. And there really is no argument or need to defend the use of the word. Very few Native Americans are even bothered by the name. I grew up not to far from DC, and many of my Native relatives are big Redskin fans and not even close to offended. Now if they used some cartoonish mascot or depicted Native Americans cartoonishly, then the name would be a bigger issue.

While I am not for changing the name, I believe Snyder and his ego may have done him in because it will now ratchet up the tension with his remarks. Whether people care or not, they will start to jump on board because people always want to protest something.
