David McFarland new coach at Ryle

Featured Replies

I can't believe it. Ryle must really want to be the Ryle Rebels. They have one of their own great players, and a great teacher by the way, in Dustin Margrave teaching in the building but would rather have a Rebel be their head and JV coach.

I'd think it might be better to view them as two young men who gained a ton of experience playing a lot of minutes at the Division II level for Dave Bezold at Northern Kentucky University.

I had this confirmed, Rasso will be the JV coach for Ryle next season.

Wow! The players will be disappointed. David had told them at the players meeting on Friday that they were going to interview for the JV job. A lot of the players were really hoping either Coach Williams or Coach Hostettler would be back.

Would hope that the players would not be disappointed as Coach Rasso is very, very good and this lays the foundation for a really solid staff. Had the opportunity to watch Coach Rasso a few times last time year and was very impressed with his work at LLoyd.

Not a good way to start your relationship with the players. I do think though it would be best to sever the ties with the old regime. Don't want the "this is how we used to do it" being talked about in the locker room. David might be doing himself a favor by bringing in a "yes man" in Travis. I don't see Rasso putting up much criticism to David which might be good for a first year head coach.

I don't think playing at the college level necessarily makes you more qualified to coach. Dustin Margrave would've made a great choice for a JV coach or assistant varsity coach.

I do agree personally that it's best to start fresh and have an entire new staff. When you tell the kids on Friday at 3:00 that you will be conducting interviews for the JV job and then Saturday night it is on a message board he has hired a JV coach it is not the way to build trust with your players. I agree Margrave would have been a solid choice

I don't think they are disappointed in who was hired, but that they were told Friday that he still had to interview people for the job and then Saturday it's reported by Walter that he hired someone.

Agreed, they are both solid coaches. But, just because you played college basketball doesn't make you the "right" choice. Mick Cronin is a head coach of a team that has went to the NCAA tournament 3 years in a row and didn't play 1 minute of college basketball.

Guarantee that McFarland will be the next head coach at Boone County. This is just a proving stop for him.

The players I've talked to couldn't be happier with the two new additions to Ryle's coaching staff. A lot of positive feedback.

I completely agree with you both. I just think it's much better for everyone involved to view the two of them as Former NKU basketball players, rather than where they played almost ten years ago.

Good to hear. Good to see Travis helping young men.

Is he a teacher?

I like David as a person, loved him as a player, but jury is still out on him as a coach. One thing to coach AAU and JV it's a whole new ball game at the Varsity level. you're the one making the big decisions and Ryle has some big holes. They have a good big but no outstanding guards. The loss of Mays is huge and will be felt early. I anticipate a 10-20 season if they keep last year's schedule, 15-15 if they go with a weaker schedule. Boone, Conner, and Cooper will all be better than Ryle next season and even in the foreseeable future as they all had tough JV/FR teams.

Yes. Certified in social studies and business education I believe.

Do you know that he didn't conduct interviews? Perhaps he interviewed 3 or 4 candidates between Friday at 3 pm and Saturday evening.

Worth noting if it hasn't been already: David McFarland is a math whiz. He was an NKU past student consultant in mathematics and they don't just hand those things out. He was just the 26th person to be designated an NKU student consultant since 2000 when he got the designation in 2010. He's not just smart at math, he's crazy smart. To shoot or not to shoot. That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler to try to score right away or wait for a better chance?
